Is it possible to have 2 computers with the same name on the same physical
network but, using different protocols like 1 using purely IP and the other
1 using IPX?

You can have more than one protocol running on the same
physical wiring and hubs/switches - even sharing routers &
bridges with the right equipment. So the answer it yes.

What would be the gain? The two systems won't be able to
talk, message, share resources (including the internet),
or share files.

Therefore, they are not on the same network.
