My sister reached out today for a recommendation on a gaming laptop. I have only ever built PCs and have no experience with laptops. She isn't a student or anything so weight & thickness doesn't matter a whole lot, nor does battery life too much. She is mostly looking to play Sims 4 but if she is spending $2000, I want to make sure she gets the most for her money, plus she plays shooters and stuff so... Anyway, do they stock modern laptops with HDD & SSD> It would be preferred so she doesn't need to cart around an external drive if she wants to hop from the desk to the couch or whatever. Any recommendations?

Not many laptops at that price range come with - or had room for - HDD anymore, and most of those intended for gaming (that is, not excessively thin and light) have two m.2 slots dedicated to SSD for expandability.

For $2000 you can look forward to something with PWM-free display and nice colour reproduction, 16GB of memory, a RTX 3070 Mobile, and an AMD Zen 3 Ryzen 7 or Intel 11th-gen Core i7. Things have evolved to a point where laptops are not really slower than desktops of equivalent cost anymore - If not occasionally cheaper, given the current trend in desktop graphic card pricing.

There are plenty of technically minded reviews out there complete with things like display quality and thermal performance. Be sure to read a few of those.

There are many great laptops according to your specifications and in the selected price range. The best of them are ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 and Razer Blade 15. They have a great screen and a powerful processor! HP Omen 15 is also a great laptop, its characteristics can be found in the article on powerful gaming laptops. By the way, I use a Razer Blade 15 laptop and I can say with confidence that it is worth the money spent. I would recommend this.

Yeah when I got my laptop last year (2020 HP Omen), it has two M2 slots, one was populated by the factory installed M2 drive and the other slot I added a WD Black SN750 and that was relatively easy. I personally would rather have only M2 drives at this point. My last laptop had a mechanical HD and that thing was a battery zapper. M2 solves that problem.

Yes, I have an Omen with a Ryzen 7 4800H and 1660TI, and it's a great laptop, handles everything I can throw at it.

Hello, I wonder if you can help me:
I have this 4 models, if someone can just tell me which one you would pick I appreciate:

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 - AMD Ryzen 7 5800H - Nvidia RTX 3060 - 512GB SSD - 8GB RAM - 1099 euros (black)
Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6 - AMD Ryzen 7 5800H - Nvidia RTX 3060 - 512GB SSD - 16GB RAM - 1350 euros (white)
Asus TUF FX516PM - i7 11370H - Nvidia RTX 3060 - 512GB SSD - 16GB RAM - 1350 euros (gray)
HP Victus 16-e0007np - AMD Ryzen 7 5800H - Nvidia RTX 3060 - 1TB SSD - 16GB RAM - 1350 euros (blue) pretty tbh

My doubts of course are:
-If the i7 is better than the AMD (for gaming, coding, normal use)
-If between the last 3 for the same price is better the double of SSD
-If is better and cheaper upgrading RAM (and maybe SSD) of the Nitro 5 choosing better gaming RAM -The screen, keyboard, and software may put the Legion 5 on top, but since the others have different offers, I'm unsure if I should take advantage of it, because is not too much different.
Thank you all.
