Hi,

I would like to get some advice on a Gaming PC upgrade I am planning.

Approximate Purchase Date: As soon as possible (this week or the next one)

Budget Range: Around 2000$ but is flexible and it can go up to 2500$ if it is worth it

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming (Most important) and coding as a secondary usage, other than that it is pretty much the usual (surfing, watching videos, etc.) nothing too demanding

Are you buying a monitor: Yes, I would like to get a 4K monitor

Parts to Upgrade: CPU, GPU and add 8GB of Ram (Other parts can also be upraded if necessary)

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: No real preferred site, I have good experience with NCIX and Newegg but any other reputed site is fine too

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Montreal, Canada

Parts Preferences: Intel (i7) for the CPU, for the GPU I want a 2080 RTX as specified in the title, no real preference for the Ram or monitor although I like Asus

Overclocking: Maybe, (I have never tried to do it for the moment tho)

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: I want to upgrade to 4K

Additional Comments: The most important thing is that the upgraded PC should run any game at 60fps constantly and at max graphics in 4k, I like a quiet PC but it is not a must. Other than that I can't think of something at the moment

Why I want to upgrade ? : My current PC is now 3 years old and on some recent games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Assassins Creed Odyssey I can see that it is having some difficulties with performance (I am more towards the 30fps than the 60) and I have to compromise for medium graphics if I want somewhat stable fps.

Here is the full description of my current PC:

Thank you in advance for your help and tell me if I forgot anyhting :)

Yeah, that was what I initially intended to do, getting an Rtx 2080 which is 500-600$ cheaper than the Rtx 2080Ti and a new gen cpu, but from what I got of the previous comments the 2080 seems to be very close in terms of performances to the 1080Ti (the new technology aside), so some people were saying it was not worth it.

Nonetheless, I think I will probably go with something like what you suggested, because I am really seduced by the new ray-tracing technology and the deep learning also seems promising although it's difficult to say how much of a difference it will make exactly.

Thank you a lot for your input.

No worries. Good luck!

So I looked up a few WQHD screens and I think that physically I can't really fit them on my desk (even if I would love to get that type of screen) which I use for multiple things and that big of a screen would just take up too much space. That leaves us with either a 4K or a normal 1440p monitor. Assuming I would go with the build you suggested what would be the best idea, take a 4k but with 60Hz (so around 800-900$) or a 1440p ?

Ok so finally I decided to go all in.

So I would buy the following:
RTX 2080Ti
i7-9700K
Some ram 2x8GB
motherboard z390
The Asus 144hz 4k monitor

Does this make sense? (I just want to be sure before I buy)

Well none of those components will bottleneck each other, its completely balanced and its practically the highest end for gaming, but I do have my doubts about your psu, it is of a very good quality, but im not sure it will keep up with your gpu, cause its actually pretty hungry for watts. I would consider upgrading your psu to 850 to go safe, although 750 might be enough. You should investigate that a little cause that might cause your system to randomly shut down.(although psu arent that expensive)

Dim, that's a fine setup, I just want to give you some insight into my latest upgrade, I went Ryzen 2700x, gigabyte x470 gaming 7 mobo and 16gb Gskill trident z, then I picked up a GTX 1080ti the ryzen is an amazing chip there is zero bottleneck at any resolution, even if you went 4k you'd be good, you could step down the mobo, I game and stream without a single issue

I think that would be okay...but also over $4000. You haven't told us what you want to do about storage yet either, and if you want fast storage you'll be into the $5k range easily with that monitor.

At 4k I really don't see the need to upgrade your CPU as the limiting factor is going to be your gpu. Even a 2080ti is going to struggle to push the fps of modern games over 100 at that resolution.

My next build is aiming to be around $3000 USD including a 2k 144hz monitor. Even with a 2080ti and 9th gen intel CPU some games will run at less than 144 fps. That's just the state of the graphics landscape right now...we don't have the horsepower to do high fps high resolution gaming yet.

Thanks all for your inputs.
I think I will try to keep my PSU for the moment and if I see that there is any problems I will update then.
redfox, thank you for your insight but I really like the build I suggested and I think I will keep up with it.
For storage I already have a 2TB ssd that should do the trick.

One adjustment I will however make to the build I proposed is that I will have to downgrade to a cheaper monitor because I realized that the 144hz (ROG Swift PG27UQ) Asus is just too much money. I was thinking of grabbing the ROG Swift PG27AQ which is much cheaper at around 1300$ Canadian dollars. Will it bottleneck the setup however?

Personally I would prefer high fps over higher resolution, and go with a 165hz 2k monitor...but that's totally subjective.

As for bottlenecking...no. I think there are only 2 or 3 consumer GPUs that will consistently achieve 60 fps at 4k on max settings...one of those being the rtx 2080ti

Yeah I understand, but I really want to upgrade to 4K and with a stable 60fps I am happy. However, are there other 4K monitors in this price range that you could recommend?

The only gsync 4k monitors are from asus and acer...I don't think there's much difference between the two.

If you wanted to save a few hundred dollars you could go for a monitor without gsync.

Sorry I didn't really answer your question...LG and Samsung probably have monitors in that price range...may have better image quality or viewing angles...but you would have to dig through reviews to get a better answer on that.

There's an Acer XB271HK that is about the same price, same features.

If you wanted to save a few hundred dollars you could opt for one without G-sync.

+1 on this monitor. It's what I have. It's not 144hz but still a great looking monitor and has gsync.
