Question 2200G or 2600 with GTX1060 for 1440p?

I recently finished my build and decided to upgrade to a 1440p monitor. Games are currently running at 99% GPU usage and the 2200G is being used 60-70%.
My frames are roughly 40-45fps. I was wondering if upgrading to the 2600 will bring my frames up to a consistent 60fps? I know since the GPU is already at full utilization that upgrading CPU might not make a big difference, but would like to hear some other opinions. Thanks!

In that situation upgrading the cpu won’t help. The gpu is the limiting factor and not the cpu.

An upgrade of the GPU to a 1070 would be best. Keep in mind however, your CPU usage may change. If the GPU is maxing and the CPU is between 60-70%, it is likely either some cores are not being utilized or the cpu usage will increase as well.

As a test set your game to 1080p. If you get the fps you want then only the gpu is an issue. If your cpu hits 100% and you are still not getting the FPS you want then after a gpu upgrade you will then be cpu limited.

In that case will having more cores help with framerate? I just got the 1060 and wanted to wait awhile before i upgrade. But the 2600 can potentially be a viable futureproof should i make the decision to upgrade GPU.

This depends on particular game, but generally GTX 1060 is just too weak for 1440p (it's great for 1080p though). You have to either lower resolution or lower ingame visual quality settings.

Most modern games are optimized for 6 cores as they are mainstream, but I believe a few are using 8 cores as well. Many older titles use 4 cores, so it mostly depends on the games you play. Your best results would be the upgrade to a 1070 and the resale of the 1060. As the 1070 runs about 40% faster than the GTX 1060 6 GB version, and only costs $100 more than the 1060.


Honestly, I recommend both upgrades for 1440p. Ryzen 5 2600 and the GTX 1070 together would amount to a total of about 80% increase in performance, with the addition of two extra physical cores on your processor.
