I personally wouldn't be so reserved about monitors in general, because, let's face it, when you game or do whatever you are doing on your computer, you are going to be staring at the monitor for the longest, and a lot of your experience will come from the monitor itself as well (in some cases, even more so than from GPU), so a good monitor to the OP's liking goes a lot further than sparing a few bucks on it.
Buying a cheap monitor to go with expensive GPU's is like buying a Ferrari with wooden seats. It'll be great if all you do is stare the Ferrari, but as soon as you go use it, it'll be uncomfortable as hell.
