Ok so i have a Xeon e3 1231v3 and i was wondering if it would be able to run ram at 2400mhz with xmp enabled. I looked around, but some said yes it will work, and some said it wouldnt. So my question is will it work at the 2400mhz speed or should i buy 1600mhz ram for a few $$ less? Also yes i have a z97 mobo. I know its unnecessary but i got it on sale for cheap.

So for $2 more do you think i should try the 2400 ram? Will xmp work on my xeon? And if it doesnt work will it just run at a lower speed like 1600?

So should i try it and see what happens? It will still work even it it doesnt run at 2400 right? And i see xmp in my bios, but its grayed out. Is that because my current ram doesnt support it? Ive read that you can enable xmp on any haswell cpu. I currently have 1333 Samsung ram from an older computer.

Ok thanks. So even if xmp didnt work with my cpu on the 2400 ram could i still oc it that high? And if that doesnt work, will it just run at 1600 or 1866?

I read that the haswell locked i5s could take 2400 ram so why wouldnt my xeon?

But i heard an i5 4590 will run 2400 ram, and thats not a k series. Should i just get the 2400 ram and see what happens? Since its only $2 more i dont think it will really be that big a deal if it works or not.

Ok thanks, I think ill go ahead and order it then and see what happens.

Ok the ram arrived today. I installed it, set xpm, booted it up, and the windows 10 task manager says the ram is running at 2400mhz. Is the task manager accurate or should i test it with another program to see if it is working properly?

In the CPU-Z program, on any computer i try says the ram is running at a lower speed than anything else. Am i looking at the right spot?

Ok thanks that really helped. I didnt realize it was half of the frequency rate. It is showing up as 1200 so i guess its working properly. Thanks for all the help!

Okay, I know this is a old thread but after this read... I'm still a little confused. I've doing a "always on" media centre, NAS and gaming capable pc... I'm building a pc, and I'm using the same cpu (1231 v3) and the same. Motherboard I think (Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5) but with the 212 Evo as the cooler.

Anyway, I'm wondering that if I were to buy 2400mhz compatible memory with XMP, would it actually run at 2400mhz or would the CPU limit it to 1600mhz. Especially knowing it's a locked Xeon. So... What is gonna happen? Can I just enable XMP and it'll overclock fine or will I somehow have to manually overclock it, even though Xeon are not overclockable.

Please, I've been looking for an answer for ages and I can't find one anywhere.
