I am looking in to buying an iphone 5s this fall but I don't feel like paying for un-needed data. I would also like to keep the price down. Is 250MB or 500MB of data enough or should I go with 2GB? I would use wifi most things but check the weather and browse the internet with data.

If you don't plan to use your data much outside of your wifi coverage then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. 2GB of data could be overkill if you really don't plan on using your data outside of your wifi range. If you spend most of your time within accessible wifi range then you should be fine. It really depends where you are most of your time and what you use your phone for. 250-500MB of data are great if you don't really plan to surf the net much using data. This much data should allow you to check for the occasional weather update and maybe search something on the internet.

So unless you plan to stream videos from Youtube, Netflix, etc and/or spend a lot of time on social media then you should be fine with the minimal data...

Just keep in mind that you have very little wiggle room for mistakes and it could cost you some unexpected fees if you are not careful. So if you plan to keep an eye on the weather occasionally and maybe look a few things up here in there then you should be fine. Especially if you spend most of your time within reach of Wifi. Anyways hope this answers your questions and good luck!

remember there are many apps which use data.

-navigation
-app updates
-twitter/facebook feeds
-email
-web browsing
-weather
-etc

unless you are in wifi the entire time you will have data pulling down although the amount depends on what apps you have installed and are using.

i used 133mb last month with my phone in wifi range most of the time with very little useage on the cell network for data. i searched a few times on google, used the phone a short time for nav and thats about it.

if i stream video, radio, use navigation extensively or actually use the phone as a smartphone my data can go over 1gb pretty easily. my typical months were about 3-5gb when i used to constantly stream radio over data.

TLDR: if you use the phone as a smartphone then no, 250mb is not enough. however, you CAN set your phone to not use your data plan or to cap at a certain amount so that you do not go over and you CAN live with 250mb if you set it up correctly. you might be unable to look things up if you hit your cap though and may be inconvenienced depending on your usage needs.
