I'm one of the countless numbers of us who troll newegg looking for good deals...well, today, that found me staring at a dual-slot cooler 2600XT. No, the card still doesn't need external power...Both the DDR3 and DDR4 versions have said dual slot cooler (not that it would matter---memory is on the back!).

Seems like they're marketing to someone in particular, but who? This card can be passively cooled, and if you're building mom a The Sims machine, why would you want a loud, dual-slot hsf?

Perhaps the fan is low-speed, the idea being to exhaust heat out the back rather than adding it to the case. This could make some sense on a poorly ventilated, smaller HTPC design.

The powercolor HD 2600XT has always been dual-slot. In fact the cooler is so big that it's pratically triple-slot. It runs VERY cool.

Most of the time when it's a dual slot cooler and doesn't need to be, it's an efficient one like the IceQ models from HIS, and they're quieter than the small whiney single slot fans.

Those who need them probably know why they're there, and it's usually for lower noiser, lower tempts, and greater OCs, but then again some people just like bling, and a big UV reactive LED lit HSF looks cooler than a memory stick sized piece of nothing, so there's also weird reasons too.
