280 vs 280x

So I was looking at video cards and saw the msi 280 then the 280x and the 280 is a 3gb card clocked at 933 MHz and costs 180 bucks. And the 280x costs like 300 and is also a 3gb card ans is clocked at 850 MHz so .... Wtf

Prices vary everywhere. Average R9-280 is about ~$200. Average R9-280X is about ~$250.

Each vendor gets to set the clock speeds themselves. If they spend the time to bin the chips and assembled cards, they will make multiple product lines with different factory clocks. You might get a fully functional R9-280X GPU that doesn't have a very good temperature envelope, so it is downclocked so the cooler is effective.

(Though most R9-280X are indeed just under or above 1Ghz)

The 280 has something like 256 fewer stream processors (1792 vs 2048). The 280x is therefore a little faster but overclock the 280 and the gap closes pretty quickly. They are literally the 7950 and 7970, so search some benchmarks on those and you'll see how they compare.
