2GB or 4GB on RAM stick?

Which is better...
two sticks of 2GB RAM or 1 stick of 4GB RAM?
Is there even a difference?

I am asking because i am looking at a building an machine with an intel i-5 and the board can handle up to 16GB w/ 4 slots. Clearly either way there is room to expand the memory later...

You either have to work with 2X2gb or 2X4gb to take the advantage of dual channel mode.

So it is 4GB (2x2) or 8GB (4x4)
Can't do 4GB (1x4)
