So I just bought this monitor.

AOC CQ27G1 27" Curved Frameless Gaming Monitor QHD/2K

What should I upgrade on my PC to get 2k at 144hz? I could get another used 970 and run it in SLI for probably like 100$ or should I just update my GPU?

i5 6600k
ASUS Z170 DELUXE
MSI GTX 970
16GB RAM
2x 480 gb SSD
Cooler Master - MWE Gold 750W ATX12V 2.31 80 Plus Gold Modular

Sli support in games has been in decline for years. I saw a review of games over the last few years and of those that support Sli the performance boost was an average of 30%. Also Sli does not add VRAM and 4GB VRAM is not enough for modern AAA games at 2k, it is only just enough for 1080p. Sli is a bad option. A single stronger card is a much better choice.

However I see further issues. Your quad core cpu is going to struggle in newer cpu heavy games to keep over 60fps let alone the 100+ you ideally want for 144Hz.

So I should prioritize a cpu upgrade?

Higher resolution tends to be more GPU dependent. You'll probably be OK with your current CPU, but you'll take a performance hit in some games (at any resolution really).

Buying a second GPU is a bad idea. SLI/CF is essentially dead in 2019 (and 2020!) and the 970 is really a 3.5 GB VRAM car with another 0.5 GB of slower VRAM. At 1440p, you're going to start running into texture issues with this GPU (and buying a second one doesnt' change that).

Mostly PUBG but I play a lot of games. Got RDR2 and the performance of my rig is disappointing but that's what happens after 4 years. At the time I wanted to make sure my Mobo would last, it has.

I have to stay Intel cause my board so I'm thinking the i7 9700k and a RX 5700xt together would get me back to the top essentially?
You should prioritize both CPU and GPU. What graphics settings are you trying to play at? What games are you playing?

I should just grab the 5700xt then now and upgrade my CPU later. I'll see more return on games now with the GPU upgrade and can upgrade to a i7-9700k or better later.

Would that be your move in this situation?

Damn, I was hoping I could get a CPU upgrade outta my MOBO...
Looks like my best bet right now is to just upgrade my GPU to a RX 5700 XT and then upgrade my MOBO and CPU at the same time in the future.

Your mobo doesn't support the 9700K (or any 8th or 9th gen CPU). You'll need a 300 series board for that.
