2nd Gen i3 vs 3rd Gen i3

Why does Windows see the 2nd Gen i3 as a quad core processor, but the 3rd Gen i3 as dual core?

that depends on the processor and model number (not on the generation)....if the dual core i3 has ht,windows will see it as a quad core

If it didnt' have HT wouldn't that make it a Pentium by default and not an I3?

I was kind of asking that as a question. There are a few outliers in the naming scheme but to my knowledge all I3s have HT, and no pentiums do kinda thought that was the only difference, but if someone showed me a I3 with no HT it wouldn't shock me... the I7 mobile dual core processors are what make me scratch my head...

@Supahos.....yes indeed....all i3 s are ht d (basically a pentium processor with ht)

as for the i7 s....mobile quad core i7 s have a Q at the end

Okay then I get that on the mobile side the I3s are dual core with HT, the I5s are Dual Cores with HT + Turbo boost, What is the difference between a Dual core I5 and a Dual Core I7?

you will never find 2 processors having the same clock though

The I7 4458U and I5 4330M have the same clockspeed. I see now that the I7s have 4 mb of Cache... so basically there would be no real advantage in those two processors I listed here. Actually the I5 has a max boost of 3.5 ghz compared to 3.3 for the I7... go figure

M=mobile processor
U=ultra low power (lesser tdp)

so turbo is bound to be less
