2X Dual Channel or 1X Quad Channel

I have a motherboard with 4 RAM slots of which I use 2 with a Dual-channel HyperX Savage 1866Mhz 2X4GB kit. I am planning on upgrading to an other motherboard as well, and I want to upgrade to 16GBs of RAM too. Can/Should I use the actual Dual channel kit and add in an other Dual channel kit, or should I rather buy 2X8GBs of RAM for assured compatibility? And if I can/should use Double-Dual kit, are the 4 slots on a Motherboard fine for them(I'm thinking about the color-coding on the memory slots) or should i go for 8 slots in this case?

It depends on the motherboard your going to buy in general it best to buy a matched set of memory and not add more sticks to existing sticks.
