News 3,800-hour test could show OLED burn-in is on the decline — MSI MPG 321URX shows only 'minor' issues after 15 months of worst-case scenario use

The article said:
Most people won’t use their OLED monitors in such an ‘extreme’ way, it is admitted.
Oh, yes they will! This is certainly heavy usage, but not extreme by a long shot! Extreme is when like a business puts a monitor in a kiosk or public area and leaves it on like 12 hours per day, 7 days a week, with the brightness set higher than 200 nits. Or worse: they just leave it on all the time - 168 hours/week!

About the only thing I'd do differently than what this user did was to set a screen blanker for 20 minutes of inactivity. Maybe 15, but I find any less than that tends to annoy me. And that's why I opted not to buy an OLED, when I replaced my monitor in Dec 2023.

Hopefully, my next monitor will be an OLED, though. I'd also buy an OLED TV, because I simply don't watch enough for burn-in ever to be a major issue on it.

Baby your $1050 monitor (current price at BestBuy) or replace it in 3 years, which amazingly is the warranty period of the monitor.
I had my last monitor for more than 10 years, before it started acting up. If I got anything less than 5 years out of a monitor, I'd consider it a poor product. I put easily more than 60 hours/week on it.

The taskbar became obvious very quickly. We are also getting to a plateau in monitors. They won't be replaced as quickly because we aren't going much beyond 4K on the desktop. I'm still sour over plasma burn-in and I'm not rich enough to replace monitors after three years of use.

I had a Panasonic plasma that didn't burn in after 11 years of use. I did have a couple of "image retention" issues, but those went away after I learned to be much more careful about limiting its contrast setting, whenever there would be any sort of fixed graphics on the screen, for an extended period of time, which would significantly contrast with the background.

It was annoying to have to manage, but I successfully avoided any more image retention, and the original instances did indeed fade completely away (as far as I could see).

Just bought an LG C4 42” to replace the aging Samsung 4K LCD, will let you know of my first impressions.
Ooooh! I just got the 55in version. I have to say, I love it. The picture quality is superb, with the blacks really deep, and the colours literally popping out of the screen. I have it 2 weeks, and am currently running through my 400 UHD BR's. I'm very aware of burn-in and perhaps after reading horror stories am hyper aware to it. But then I calmed a bit once I copped that my usage scenario is no-where near the articles level, or extreme usage.

With that said, a lot of channels on my stream box have embedded screen icons, regardless of channel selected. It is sitting in the back of my mind that this is where I will eventually get burn-in. But, not all channels have that, and any movies I watch are from my own collection and do not have said onscreen icons. I've turned off power saving features as I like the extra brightness, but have left all the panel care tech on, and will consider doing a pixel clean once every couple of months.

I'm absolutely dying to get my PC hooked up to it, and play something like COD BO6 which is faced paced, graphically pleasing and will max out the refresh rate at 4k. I understand the response times are insane for OLED. But, I've gone and put the OLED in my bedroom, and can't bring myself to move it onto my PC desk to give gaming a go. It's just too big. I'd need to sit a couple of meters away just to be able to keep the screen in my sight centre on, and still be able to see the entire screen. Conundrum.com

Interested to hear how you get on 👍

Congrats on the purchase you definitely made a great choice. I have had a 65 C1 in the living room for a few years and love everything about it, use it for film, shows and PS5 gaming heavily, no burn in fears at all. I even brought my case to the living room a few times to play some more eye candy games like SH2 on it and was blown away, that’s why buying a 42” C4 was a no-brainer.
The TV came today and I was pleased to find out I could set it up on my flexispot 7 Pro alongside my 27” Acer that’s connected to my work laptop. I even found enough space to put my case on the desktop too.
The picture is of course brilliant, you got the incredible blacks and the vivid colours but those were no surprise. What surprised me was how sharp the text looked. I had prepared myself to try to look past blurry outlines or weird looking text but I didn’t have to do none of that.
Played Lies of P and got 120fps with high settings, HDR and DLSS at balanced. The game looked fantastic and it was buttery smooth. I didn’t even bother turning on 144Hz mode cause frankly my 3080 ain't getting there at 4K.

PS: No need to run pixel cleaning manually, my C1 runs it automatically every now and then. Also turn off everything on OLED care, the TV has good settings under its service menu to protect against burn in.
PPS: Go check out the YT channel “HDTVTEST” the guy running the channel is amazing and has a few videos about good settings for LG OLED TVs.

And that's why you go IPS. My Corsair Xenon in my signature has superb colors and 144hz display and I don't have to baby it.
BTW, I've got to say that I'm disappointed with my IPS monitor's poor native contrast. It seems to rely too much on backlight dimming. I tried fiddling with the settings and couldn't, for the life of me, get the darn thing to resolve greyscale differences of less than about 3-4 intensity levels, near black. I was truly shocked! Definitely not what I'd expect from a $600 monitor. And what good is 10-bit color support, when you can't even resolve greyscale differences as well as probably some 6-bit panels can??

It's an ASUS XG27AQMR, which I got partly because it supports both GSync HDR and Freesync Premium Pro. It also supports DisplayPort HBR3, which means I don't have to choose between HDR and framerates of 144 Hz (or above?). Also, it supports variable overdrive, which I've read is quite rare to see for anything that's not a true GSync monitor.

Other than that, it's okay. Good colors and more than bright enough. HDR is underwhelming, but I didn't get it primarily for that. I just wanted a monitor that could do HDR and it's supposed to support DisplayHDR 600, which is above the minimum tier, yet I do think its HDR support is pretty much bare minimum.

The other thing I get with it is a bit of screen door. Most noticeable when it first turns on. Suffice to say that it has left plenty of room for my next monitor to improve upon.
