My brother and I have been building computers for a little while but are completely new to overclocking. i have a few questions.
I know these questions might be weird or seem dumb but bare with me

1.) Will an overclocked CPU always run at a the higher clock speed even when just idle?

2.)if yes to the previous question, is it possible to only increase the speed that an intel CPU boosts too?

3.) Will I gain any real increase in gaming performance /FPS if I overclock my 9900k to 4.9,5.0,5.1?(I have a 2080 super GPU)

Thank You all

Solution
#1. It depends. If you set a static frequency yes it will run at your indicated speed. But there are options in the motherboard where you just set the max freq so it will down-clock while not under load.

#2 Yes, it's been a while since I've done it but I'm pretty sure on most boards you leave everything on automatic and just set the max cpu multiplier.

#3 No. If you have a 1080p 240hz monitor it's possible you may see a tiny fps difference, but other than that no you won't. OCing the 9900k for gaming isn't really worth it imo. At stock speeds it's a monster and to jack all the cores up you're going to be producing some heat and for gaming you'll get next to no benefit.

Thank you very much. That is what I figured the answer for number 3 would be

I do have a 1440 p 144/165 hz monitor if that makes a difference,

I honestly think you'll be more bottle necked by your gpu before a 9900k, really wouldn't worry about it. I have a 3440x1440 120hz monitor and my 9900k is great. I fooled around trying to oc it just for the heck of it but it was just more trouble than it's worth. It's already a workhorse. You won't see a difference.

Yeah, that's the consensus I've come to as well. Thanks for the reply
