Hello,

I am currently using two monitors and would like to set up the third.

My graphics card is a GTX 1070 and has these slots:
- [strike]1 x Dual-link DVI-D[/strike] (Main monitor, 144hz)
- [strike]1 x HDMI 2.0b[/strike] (Second monitor, 60hz tv)
- 3 x DisplayPort 1.4

My third monitor is a bit older and only has DVI/VGA.

Should I get an active or passive DVI to DisplayPort adapter.

I have no interest in Eyefinity (or the NVIDIA equivalent), if that is relevant.

Solution

If you had to go with DP to VGA then the adapter would have to be active to convert the digital(DP) signal to an analog(VGA) signal. DVI is digital so going from DP to DVI doesn't usually require an active adapter. There are some AMD cards that do require and active adapter when using more than 2 monitors but the Nvidia GTX 1070 doesn't have this restriction.
