3 Network sockets in series in new house

Good morning all,

We moved house on Monday to a house that is only nearly 2 years old and unfortunately the previous owners did not leave any documentation for anything so we are trying to piece bits together.

There are 3 RJ45 sockets in the house 1 in the study one in the living room and one in the under stairs cupboard (where the fibre comes in). I have looked everywhere for some sort of output from these where i could put a switch but found nothing. So I tried plugging bits into them and the only combination that works is having something plugged into the under stairs cupboard and the living room, we actually want the under stairs cupboard and study to work.

So last night I took the covers of the wall to see how they were wired and the living room and under stairs cupboard have 8 wires going to them as you would expect but the one in the study has 16, 2 of each which leads be to assume they are connected in series.

If this is the case would you not expect the one in the middle to work correctly? or do you think there could be any other explanation?

Essentially I want to know what I need to do to get the study and the under stairs cupboard talking to I can connect my PC to the internet with cables rather than wifi.

Many thanks

Sean

Ethernet it pretty picky sometimes. It only takes 1 wire that does not make solid contact with the metal pins to make it not work.

Maybe would should just start over and pull it all lose and re-terminate it the way you need the keystone jacks are fairly easy to use now that they sell them in the home improvement stores. I would convert the one in the study to 2 jacks and if you would need to extend the connection you could put a small switch in the study to properly connect ethernet runs.

What you have is more common for a phone install but in a 2 year old house it is strange they did not have a coax and a couple ethernet connections run to every room.

Hi Bill,

A bad connection does not really add up as it is the middle one that does not work, if it was one at the end of the chain I would be thinking the same. Unfortunatly there is little to no slack in the wires they have left so what you suggested probably wouldnt be possible anyway. I guess what I want to know before I start pulling wires out is in theory if you had three ports in series should it work if you plug into the middle one end, both ends will clearly work as it just looks like a longer cable to the signal but i am not sure about an end and a middle.

Thanks

Sean

It is a extremely non standard install so its hard to say what will work. The jacks are not designed to be installed in that way and may not make proper connection to the wires. All ethernet is point to point. There are splice block things you can put in the middle but all they do is splice the wire.

As we dont need the port in the lounge I disconnected it from the study point so just the under stairs cupboard was connected to the study and this works for us. Apparently they have done this in other houses it seems Bovis just don't know how to use install Ethernet but are wiring it in anyway.

Not uncommon practice as an RJ11 will fit in a RJ45 socket, this means the ones run in series would still function as telephone points as long as the blue pair were connected to the telco.
