Hello.

I recently realized that my internet, which I thought was capped at 100 megabits/sec, can actually be as fast as 300 if I use a different port (labeled GE) on my modem. My router, however, still only supports 100 megabits even if I use the newly discovered port. It's a Tenda Wireless N300 Home Router and it was advertised as being capable of reaching 300mbps.

I want to know for sure if I'm doing something wrong before actually buying a new router, so help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Which exact tenda router do you have. If it does not have gigabit wan and lan ports it will be limited to 100m.

The 300mbps number is a silly marketing number that nobody every can get and uses methods to calculate speeds that are intentionally confusing. It would be like calling a gigabit ethernet port 2gbit because you can send and receive 1gbit at the same time. On ethernet you actually can do that but wireless most things are based on installation that only exist in a testing lab.

before you count your sheep, lets start with:

your isp contract is for what speed? they will only give you this speed, even if your line supports more, you get what you pay for, nothing else.

your router may infact deliver 300mbps, but requires a 300mbps source and you just dont have that source.

my land line can go upto 20mbps apparently, but i only get 5mbps ... cause thats what i paid for, and i have my own private router which i use instead of the generic piece of do-do the isp sent me.

My contract is for 300mbps. Up to this point I've lived with the knowledge that I only had 100 (since I'm not the one who does that stuff). I realized this when I plugged my ethernet cable directly into the supposed gigabit port on my modem. The thing is, if I plug the WAN cable in that same port, the router still only delivers up to 95 something up/down speeds, so I do have the right source. I may be repeating myself here but that's the best I can explain :/
