Hi

Is it possible to make a SATA RAID low cost hardisk array that can
deliver minimum 300MBps? Let's say minimum 3TB.

The reason I'm asking is that I want to be able to play (and work
with) large uncompressed High Definition pictures realtime, but I
can't afford the expensive brands.

In/out PCI could be from this:

or

No. You'll have to wait for the next genereation of SATA II drives.

What will SATA II do that will allow a low cost 3TB 300MBps storage
solution? That is one tall order.

Thanks,

Ok, thanks for the answers.

3ware Escalade 9500S-12 has 12 ports. 12x250mb drives is 3TB.

I guess by your post that using 2 controllers is just begging for
problems, but If I use just one, is it then just striping them and
then plug and play - or will I often run into a lot off other problems
on my way??

How fast will this be, anyone want to guess??
Why will it be better with SATA II ?
When will the first SATA II arrive ??
What RAID is the right choice for me?

12 x Maxtor250 3200 $
3ware 9500 1200 $
PCI 64 matrox 1000 $
motherboard ??

Either way, 1 card with 12 ports or 2 cards with 6 ports, if just 1 of your
drives dies-you are screwed. You MAY get better performance by 2 cards but
that is a realm I am just not familiar with. The 2 cards are cheaper thats
why I used them as an example.

I think the only choice for you is RAID 0, or if you double your costs, RAID
10 (mirrored striped sets). Any other raid schemes involving parity will
cause you to take a big performance hit and probably never reach your 300MBs
requirement (which exceeds uncompressed HD by about 100MBs).

Sounds fun though.

As far as SATA II goes, I don't see how it would help you. The drive speed
isn't limited by the interface in most all cases (i.e. the throughput of a
10,000rpm SATA disk is *about* what you would expect froma 10,000 SCSI disk)

The ability to do that has NOTHING to do with SATA 300.

www.3ware.com

Brands of what?

Forget regular PCI....too slow.

"64bit PCI Video Card"

No, use Hitachi 7K400 drives.

Mobo limited.

No.

There is no other option except RAID 0 or $100K.

What's the above?
