The i5 wins by quite a lot. If you are doing any heavy threaded workloads (encoding video etc) then the FX is a good choice but not the 9590, the 8320 is comparable to the i7 in SOME workloads.

Pretty much. It's more than just an increased multiplier and they have some minor other advantages, but basically it's just for the sake of being able to get an FX-8350 that's guaranteed to run at 5GHz (provided you cool it properly). If you just purchase an FX-8350, there's a chance that you may not get it stable past 4.5-4.7GHz, or it will require an absurd amount of voltage (and thus really good cooling) to get it running at higher clocks.

That said, it uses significantly less power at 4.7-5GHz than most FX-8350s that are manually overclocked there. Take a look:

Even in the latter review, the FX-9590 @ 5GHz only peaks at 120W over the stock FX-8350. Meanwhile if you take a look at overclocked results of the FX-8350, at ~4.7-5GHz it was usually drawing about 150W more than it does at stock, as seen here.

He didn't get the best price to performance ratio on his build. That's ok as long as he got what he wanted. It's still a good CPU regardless. He just fell victim to AMD's marketing and thinks it's a better CPU than it really is... Personally I'd rather have gotten an 8320 and overclocked it if I wanted an AMD processor. AMD is for budget computing and not for £2.5K computing. I guess some people can't understand that.

This is just an educated guess, but the i5-3570K may even be better in most games at stock clocks, to say nothing of 4.5 GHz.

The FX-9590 is an overpriced, power-hungry monstrosity designed and marketed as a gimmick. If you must go with AMD, overclock an FX-8350.

Thanks for the info

He'll need a Noctua NH-D14 w/ triple fans, Kraken X60 or something insane like that... I wonder why they stopped selling the FX-9370 and 9590 as a combo with a liquid CPU cooler.

It was likely a casualty of their price drops. AMD must have learned very quickly how many enthusiasts are willing to spend nearly $700 for a mediocre processor that needs as much power as a high-end video card.

A couple months ago you could buy an FX-9370 + liquid cooler bundle for $300 and FX-9590 + liquid cooler bundle for $350. I guess sales for them were really bad and they dropped the price to sell off the rest of the bundles since nobody was biting.

He should have gotten Quad Crossfire reference R9 290x and a stock cooler FX9590 instead. He'll be able to keep warm in his polar expedition 😛 At least he can still use it to keep his family warm in the winter.

Yea, the heating costs my actually go down with that thing running. Have him run F@H on it at night for those cold winter nights.

Have him overclock the CPUs and GPUs another 30% and get some sound proof material. "Ahh it's toasty in here! Where is the fireplace?" "Over there!" *points to 6GHz fx 9590 and 130%fan speed R9 290x reference versions*
