News 3D Benchy’s new owner ruffles the community’s feathers

benchy became a standard, but ANY other model can do exactly the same. It just needs 1 or 2 of each of the same curves, straight edges and support-requiring shapes. and thats it.

it could be a model of an animal standing up on its back legs (Mousey), a car (Trucky), a building (Housey) or an actual workbench with tiny printed tools on top (WorkBenchy)

True, it could be anything.

But this one has been the known standard for many years. Something to compare against.

Shame on them for going down this road. Just leave it be, out there for the public.

Some pretty important information that's missing from this article: Per all3dp's coverage of this, NTI Group isn't behind this - they aren't the ones who requested this license enforcement.

The Benchy was good for its time but now it's just to see how fast you can print it.

This makes me want to make a "not a benchy" lol

I am still waiting on one of the Internet lawyers or copyright/patent experts to weigh in on their case against the 100 years of tugboats that were clearly quite similar to the Benchy in design. Clearly they went back in time purely to infringe.

It sounds like nothing has changed and some folks are just trying to enforce the original license that has been there since the initial release of the model.
