4 beeps with Asrock Z77 extreme4

Hello guys,

I'm having trouble with Windows 8.1 and (possibly) my RAM. Everytime I format the computer, it runs smoothly for a few days, but after that, I start getting random reboots (without any warning). After shutting down, the mobo beeps 4 times (short beeps) and it tries to restart (it usually succeeds on the 2nd attempt). I've read the 4 short beeps could be happening because of some RAM problem, but i'm not sure if it's a configuration problem in the BIOS or really a bad ram module...
These are my specs:
Intel Core i5 3570K
Asrock Z77 Extreme4
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 OC 2Gb
8GB (4x2) G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600 (F3-12800CLD8D-8GBXM)
PSU: Corsair CX600M

Also, I have to say that after (randomly) removing one of my ram modules (actually, the most accesible module) the computer starts and runs (so far) without any issue. I find it hard to believe that i happened to remove the faulty module (chances are 1/2) so I'm more inclined to think that it's all have more to do with a configuration problem in the BIOS (?)

As one last piece of info, all these problems started happening after happily using W 8.1 for like 2 months, I woke up one day and my computer started acting up like this...

What do you guys suggest? Should i enter the RAM clocks manually in BIOS? Try to update BIOS? (I think asrock hasn't updated it in like forever) or run a Memtest?

Cheers ;D

Solution
Hello again guys

I haven't had much time to log into the forum but I can happily announce that I'm no longer getting the error ever since I manually set the clocks in BIOS. Its been 2 weeks and I haven't had any problem.
Just wanted to drop by to thank you both and leave this here written for anyone experiencing the same thing in the future.
I'll let you know if anything goes wrong. Hopefully not.
Cheers!

Can i only check that when the error is happening?

I changed the RAM BIOS settings to XMP profile 1.2 and it seems to be working now... Do you think that was the problem?

Cheers

Yes, i only just checked my purchase invoice, Ripjaws X DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 8GB 2x4GB CL8 - F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM

You're right, i added an extra D for no reason in the description. What can you tell me about this ram or the recommended settings? It would be greatly appreciated.

You can find the modules here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231445

Cheers.

Hello again!

I finally fixed the problem a few weeks ago. But this morning I've got the same error again...

I've done some googling and it could be that the 4 beep error with as rock z77 extreme4 is caused by a bent pin in the mobo socket...

How can it possibly be a bent pin? I mean, if it was a broken component, i would've had the same issue from the beginning. I've had this mobo for little over a year, and things started to happen after i decided to install windows 8. If I had bent a pin during the cpu installation, i would've had problems from day one. I haven't even touched the CPU cooler ever since I installed everything a year ago, so I highly doubt i could've damaged anything at all :S

What else do you suggest? 🙁

LOL this is a bit nuts...

So after trying to boot it up like 5 times (with their four corresponding beeps), i let the computer rest for about 15 minutes.

I decided to give it a go and... voilà, it booted normally.

What am I missing here? This is driving me crazy.

I don't know. what I see is 4 beeps is system timer error according to the link I sent you above ... you may want to google that around .. you may want to try to up your bios .fall back, or just reflash it to see if its something there [??] try replacing the battery on the board .. lots to look at with that right down to motherboard failure,

how long has this gone on? any hardware changes or updates or overclocking occur then the issue appeared?

No changes at all in a year. All these problems started when installing Windows 8.

well do you think theres something on it that may not support 8 and causing a conflict??

bios 2.10 started support for 8 so I assume that your at least that or higher? that's why I brought that up above and your last flash may have been corrupt in some way so I said may reflash [???]

Hello again,
I'm on bios 2.90, I updated it last week shortly after posting here on the forum. As you may have guessed, i was already having issues with 2.80 and windows 8.

What do you think I should do? Do you think it's normal that the beeps happen every week? Because I'm getting them right now and it's been 6 days since I last posted here. This all sounds more like a joke than anything else. I was using the computer, it BSODED (something about kernel cache? I can't remember). After the bsod, it restarts over and over after beeping 4 times, as usual.

No; it's not normal to have those beeps. Did you ever get a chance to see the error codes (if any) reported on the debug panel on the motherboard? I would just open up the side panel, do a few starts (and shut downs) until you successfully trigger the beeps and see what the debug panel reports.

Also make sure your motherboard is correctly mounted onto the standoffs.

I don't know --looking that it started only after you upgraded to 8 I still think theres a driver or something that's not ment for 8 and needs to be found and updated to 8 if its something nor supported by 8 and the old software is still using a wrong driver ? was this a fresh install of 8 or is it one of them ''upgrades'' ?

Hi again guys,

As I was expecting, I left the computer rest over night and this morning i could again boot it up.
As for the issue in question, it usually happens the same way:
Some BSOD in Windows, then it restarts after it's done sending the info to Microsoft. When the comptuer shuts down and tries to restart, it won't, it will get into a bootlop, with fans rotating for about 5 seconds until the 4 beeps are done, then everything just shuts down and it starts again.
I once checked the Dr Debug of the mobo and it said Error 56. Would u say it's the RAM even though a memtest check came back negative and it USUALLY works? If it was a bad ram module i wouldn't even be able to be typing this right now, would i?

Cheers.

Can you test with ONE RAM module? So if you have two modules, just remove one of them. If you have more than two, remove until you have only one installed. When you have tested one, remove it and plug in the next one in line.

In the interest of saving time, if I were you, I would just test every component to make sure it works. The motherboard would either work or not. Not much to test there. CPU is very hard to test by itself and is usually a last resort to say it's a CPU issue. PSU should be fine. You can try removing the GPU to see if it makes a difference when testing the PSU.

funny that asrock don't list 56 in there error codes for dr debug.. also as I said a incompatible driver or software can be the cause of memory issues by trying to incorrectly accessing or using the memory this is why when you run memtest and after 24hrs it shows no failure but they get ''memory'' error codes.. you never answered about if you did a clean install of 8 or did you just upgrade you old windows?

I see that error code there now 5a-60 not 5a-6o I guess

Hello again guys!!!
It's happening (again). This time around i didn't have to wait 7 days for it. I checked Dr debug again, it says error 55, sorry, not 56.

What do you suggest i do? Do you think it's a driver? I mean, it's unlikely as it fails to load the OS, the beeps appear right after hitting the power button. Also, as I mentioned, i'd had W8 for like 2 months before this started to happen.
Would u say then it's a bad ram module?

Also guys, I've got another question.

Would you say it has something to do with the XMP profile configuration of the RAM? I've done some googling and some guys were suggested that it would be advisable to recheck the ram memory clocks and Mhz. I'm only guessing here, as right now i'm on the Mac and can't check anything on the PC until it recovers from the flu.
