4 cores idle 4 cores high usage... Pls help

Under your task manager, what does it show under applications that are running? You can usually sort by CPU usage and see what's actually using your core.

Not sure on your MB, but I know on my GF's last build I did, it uses a VIA chipset for the USB 3.0 and one of the versions of that driver sucked the CPU cycles so her CPU was running like 2-3 cores at like 50% all the time.

This. Hyper threading is only useful when threads have to wait for I/O (memory, disk access, userinput for example), if a thread only does heavy computation it will utilize the core completely, you will not gain any performance from running a concurrent hyper thread on the same core. For this reason the system will try to distribute the load over the cores and only use hyper-threads when needed.

Thanks for replying!
I sort of understand now! I have 4 physical cores and 4 "imaginary" to be used only when required for specific uses! :) The max CPU usage goes upto 30-40 %.. with my average work.. never seen higher..

And yeah 90 processes :| Many instances of chrome, svchost(total mindf*$k this one), and many little motherboard services.
My SSD is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.. so Im formatting anyways! :) Thanks people.

90 processes isn't anything out of the ordinary. I have around 70 with only browser (firefox so only one process though multiple threads), 2 pdf's open. Windows uses a lot of processes just for drivers and utility programs.

Browser and 2 PDFs open is not idling.

Don't see your point, OP never said his computer was running idle... (just the usage of 4 cores indicates he is generating some load, though not anything heavy ofc)

Guys, my PC wasnt Idle at that time... I had my browser, utorrent, teracopy copying external to external, and Defraggler defragmenting my D drive... I had a few processes on so that I could show you the difference in usages of cores.. And yeah.. I also had "numerous small processes we all hate" running 😛
