440LX Upgrade, any suggestions?

I have an old Intel AL440LX motherboard (440LX chipset)
And PII-300. What is the fastest processor upgrade available?
The memory on it is old PC-66 SDRAM, so changing
the motherboard to BX won't help
(I don't want to waste 192MB which is on board now)

If I'm not mistaken, you will be hard press to find anyone selling PII cpu's, new that is. If you have the user manual or go to the web page, you should see info for cpu,s supported. Sorry, thats all the info in my brain!

I don't consider a PII CPU as a good upgrade anyway...
I also know the list of officially supported CPU's (from Intel homepages) The fastest officially supported CPU seems to be Celeron 433, which is not worth all the work and money. The question is, is there an "unofficial" better upgrading option.

Beware if you have a Phoenix BIOS on that Intel mainboard. I've found that swapping out the processor with one that should work but is beyond the spec of the board, the POST picks up the processors ID and locks you out saying that the mb only supports 233-400 or whatever.

You appear to be saying that you want to keep your memory, you don't want a PII and celerons aren't worth it..

It's either a second hand PII, Celeron or you be changing your mb and memory to get the processor you want.

Just be glad you've already got an ATX case to work with and double check to make sure that the new memory in your system is 66Mhz. Assuming it didn't come with the system originally it could be 100Mhz running @ 66.

Celeron 533 on a slotket is the best you will do with that board. Just make sure that you get the PPGA version (2 volt) not the FC-PGA version (1.5 volt). As long as the bios supports the earlier version of the Celeron (300A etc.) it will work with the 533. You only have to set the voltage and front side bus as the multiplier is locked.

The problem with lx chipsets is most wont do anything over
5.5X66 which is anemic.
i would suggest going with new mb and cpu
you can get a Socket A mb for around 115 and a duron 700 for about 65$ this is far better than a celeron
and you can get 256meg memory for this board for 90$
from pccost, i would suggest this but if you wanted to reuse
the old memory you could find a board that would support it i suspose. but for 270$ you could have a duron 700, and 256meg ram or you could spend a little and get an asus a7v mainboard, extremely easy to setup and i highly recommend it
(have one myself). also toms hardware rates it most stable/best to overclock(if it has the dipswitch that was left of later boards)

The fastest CPU you will be able to use on that board will be either a PII-333, or a Celeron 433 with Bios upgrade #14.

When i ordered mine last fri it was 95$ it dropped to 90$
monday i ordered from www.pccost.com but as i just looked and it said N/A i would just go to www.pricewatch.com
be careful and try to get 6layer memory not 4
when i bought mine it specifically said it was compatible with the asus A7v, but if you have something older
it is probably alot easier to find compatible memory
128's are under 50$ too but when you have to pay around 10$ for shipping i was thinkin might as well order 256

also hdfreedom208 is right i was stating a general rule
but he posted the specifics on that exact Mainboard,
as a general rule if you have anything under a 350 PII
either dont upgrade it or you need a new MB too
the 350mhz's started the 100mhz buss at 3.5X 100 obiv.
so if you had a 350 you might be able to get like a 550 PIII
to work if you could fine one, however as the durons are extremely inexpensive and the motherboards support all kinds of fun stuff like agp 4x, pc133 memory etc i would just do the whole deal, mb proc, memory.

No way to plug in the new celeron, based on PIII core? I will sure puchase a new system in near future, new RAM, new motherboard. Just waiting for NV20 and 0.13 micron technology 😉 But I will still keep the old one a a second comp and since it is a second one, I don't want to purchase new RAM and new mobo for it.
