4670K High load temps @4.4GHZ with Hyper 212 EVO

Hi all,

The last few days I've been pretty worried about the temperature of my i5 4670K. It is running at 4.4ghz at 1.250V, and I have been seeing temperatures of up to 89 degrees (yikes!) in Intel burn test on high stress level. However in prime95 my temperatures seem to stay in the low-mid 70's and while gaming, low-mid 60's.

At idle, my temps range from about 27 to 33 degrees.

I just want to know if there is anything that I can do to bring the max load temps down? I have already changed the thermal paste (arctic cooling mx-4) 4 times now which has not made much of a difference to my temps. All other components are running nice and cool, (max I've seen on gpu while gaming is 72 😀)

I am using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (using the fan that came with it) and arctic cooling MX-4 paste.

As always, any/all help is appreciated!

A H100i would be an ideal water cooler. A Noctua NH-D14 would be a very good air cooler. Both are somewhat expensive.

I would definitely get at least 2 more 120mm case fans if I were you, 1 for intake and 1 for exhaust. I'm not sure which case you have, but many have this layout: 1/2 front intakes, 2 top exhausts, 1 back exhaust, 1 side intake. I'd add some if I were you, it would bring overall temps down anyway.

With the Ivy Bridge and Haswells it's difficult to get a good overclock due to intel's bad TIM. Often people have to de-lid the CPU, clean off the awful TIM and apply their own thermal paste. It voids the warranty but often has unbelievably good yields.

The only real options would be to get a better CPU cooler, or to delid your CPU since intel's TIM is terrible - the Ivy Bridge and Haswell chips get unnecessarily hot. It would however ruin your warranty, and can be somewhat of a risky process.

How many case fans do you have? If you get some more it could help improve airflow and lower temps.

I have 2 120mm case fans, one is at the front of the case pushing air towards my gpu from in between the CD drive and the hard drive bays, and the other one is at the back of the case, at the top, pulling air out and pushing it backwards out of the case and downwards. Do you think a different fan for the 212 would work? I cant believe the temps I'm getting and there's nothing more frustrating than changing thermal paste and reseating the heat sink multiple times to see no temperature loss.

Is there actually a good air cooler that i may be able to invest in? or would I have to invest in water cooling, my budget is fairly low at the moment as I'm about to buy a motorcycle...

As you can see the average overclock here http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/core_i5_4670k/ is 4.5GHz. That could be on water too, I'd say you're very lucky to get 4.4 on a 212 EVO compared to how some of the chips are.

I doubt that a different fan for the 212 would work. Even adding another of the same fan on the back of the heatsink doesn't really affect temps.

Thank you very much for your help, I will invest in some 120mm case fans first, my case is a corsair carbide 300r. I will buy 2 120mm exhaust fans for the top, and another 120mm intake fan for the side. The only thing is, I'm not sure if I have any more headers free to plug these fans in, what then? I will also probably buy the H100i in a month or so, and in the meantime drop my overclock to 4.3 or 4.2 ghz and keep the volts down. Are there adapters or extensions that i can get to increase the amount of fan headers that are available to me? Again I cant thank you enough you've been a great help!

You can get a fan controller to connect all of the fans. But be sure that if you get 4-pin connector fans that the controller can be connected to those. I got a fan controller with 3-pin connectors and bought 4 fans with 4-pin connectors which can't be connected because: http://www.moddiy.com/product_images/u/365/3__77139_zoom.jpg (I will have to cut one of the sides off)
You can also get "3 or 4-pin to MOLEX" adapters to connect directly to the PSU, but you'll have to withstand the max speed's noise (which isn't an option for me).

As for your initial question, I would wait for the results of the new case fans. You most likely do not need to de-lid the CPU, it should be something else. Maybe the "Intel Burn Test" is derping on the voltages (very unlikely and I don't see how, but...)?

These are just observations from my research, I hope they provide some help.

For the price you would spend for an upper tier Air Cooler I would suggest Water cooling. Especially since the temps you are reaching are above what I understood the 4670k to handle (I understood the max to be 75-80). Then again somebody online once said 90 is a safe temp while overclocking, I don't know what to believe.

There's great vids on youtube about how to make your own water cooling system, JayzTwoCents has 2 vids specifically (an 800$ build and a budget build, maybe $200 or so).

If DIY isn't your taste then the H100i is pretty solid. AND if you have enough room in your case you can do a push/pull 4 fan setup on the radiator to squeeze as much as you can from it... I hope any of that sheds some kind of light.

I would delid it if you don't care voiding warranty. It's a free mod and relatively easy. I was getting same temps at same clock rate but I was at 1.260v. After I delid I'm at about 65-70. Thats about 20deg difference. Of course this wouldn't be possible without CLLP TIM as well.

WOW, just read both of those reviews, I've been living with it and temps have dropped anyway (gaming I've seen 78 max - high but not as high as before and this is absolute MAX, averaging around 68 degrees) However after reading those reviews I've decided its time to save up a bit of cash for the pc rather than spending it all on the motorbike, and get a noctua, cheers guys thanks for all the help! 😀

IBT stresses the CPU and increases temps more than any other stress test that I've seen. 89*C. on IBT is about normal. Your other temps look fine. However, if you wish to see further improvement, the Noctua NH D14 is an excellent cooler.
