4770k Overclocking Question: I am Avoiding Damaging Chip

Hey guys, do you think I will be able to hit 4GHZ on my 4770k? I am a huge stability guy, so I cannot allow the machine to have any BSOD's. Do you think 4Ghz will be stable with stock voltage, or will I need to bump up Vcore to like 1.2-1.25v to be safe?

4GHz should be easy as. It hits 3.9GHz on Turbo mode anyway. In fact it's probably not even worth overclocking that 100 MHz anyway.
And that 4GHz can be done with stock voltage.

That's not a big overclock for that chip.

Key things you need- good PSU, good motherboard with solid capacitors and heatsinks on the VRMs and a decent CPU cooler.

There's no guarantees however over clocking to 4ghz probably wont need any over volting on the Vcore (I prefer to avoid bumping voltages as it can damage the chip long term).

My advice, assuming the rest of the rig is suitable- try it. Download Prime95 and run that once your machine is overclocked. If the system handles that then you should be fine. If not you may need to look at your settings and dial it back a bit. Keep playing until you find the fastest stable settings (remember you can always clock things back to normal in the event of a problem).

Also- try to overclock using the multiplier first, before adjusting reference clocks as the latter can also adjusts graphics and memory speeds which can cause instability else where.
