4770k upgrade to 6700k futureproof or not ?

I'm interested to hear what people think.

We had 5960x with 8 cores and 8 threads which was something like beast in my eyes year ago. Now with skylake i7 6700k going out, having same number of cores I'm in doubt should I even consider upgrade ? Money isn't the biggest problem but it can be spend for example to my wife PC.

I do have 980ti g1 with 16gigs of ram and my i7 4770k is clocked to 4.0 only. Should I make this upgrade most likely ~550$ worth since I would leave i7 4770k to my wife or I should wait for next gen cpu-s where game will demand more then 4 cores (if that happens ever) ? Gaming at 1080p though.

6700k only has 4 cores, and 8 threads, compared to 5960x's 8 cores, 16 threads. It's not worth your money to upgrade from a 4770k, as the CPU isn't substantially faster. Many would say that it's not even worth upgrading from a 2600k, though I made this upgrade myself — mainly for chipset features rather than raw CPU power, though.

The i7 4770K is still capable of doing anything you would like to do with it when it comes to gaming, I would stick with it for another 2 to 3 years and maybe then consider a upgrade.

Going from a 4770k to 6700k will make a negligible difference, in most tasks you wouldn't tell the difference. For gaming you won't tell the difference

Intel's newer CPUs has for years been very small upgrades over their previous generations. In fact some people are staying on the Sandy Bridge CPUs (the 2000 series) for that fact. Also if your CPU you have is the 5960x, going to the current Skylake offerings will actually be a downgrade, especially if you use multi-threaded programs. Perhaps when the skylake-E processors come out, it might be worth looking at.

I'm watching at youtube benchmarks and I see like 10-20fps difference. I'm FPS whore and I can't help myself. I'm aware that my i7 4770k is doing job now so that was the reason why I asked.

On the other hand I wanted to buy ASROCK Extreme 3 + 4690k for my wife, would you recommend that or something like i5 6600k (cheaper 30$ here) + some motherboard ? If you are suggesting me to go for skylake then please suggest some "cheaper" motherboard for that. It's gonna be most likely with evo212 or something so no overclock in begining, 4.9 turbo is enough.

If you're not just upgrading for the sake of better performance but instead buying another PC because you need another PC, then you should absolutely be going with Skylake. I personally alway buy ASUS Maximus boards, which would not be described as "chaper", but it seems like the best thing you can do is just look around at the motherboards in your price range by the brands you like, then take a look through the various review sites to see if there are any profound thoughts on the board which might change your mind.

Original idea was to upgrade my i7 4770k to Skylake and leave hardware for my wife, but she doesn't need that really. She needs more like i5 4690k (215 euros) + ASROCK Extreme 3 (115 euros), I'm watching at i5 6600k its pretty much same price but I need mobo under 120-130$ to make that buy possible at the moment.

She is playing singleplayer AAA games like new Rise of the Tomb Raider and other similiar games, survival games like H1Z1, Rust then on regular base CSGO, Dota 2, Diablo 3 so yeah she is a gamer I will get 970 for her or in worst case scenario gtx960, but at the moment I'm looking is Skylake worth over 4690k, I'm not looking for upgrades later but if I get skylake cpu and mobo including ddr4 for her that's gonna be good start for upgrade at one point for me to Skylake. So If I can find solid 130$ motherboard which will keep i5 6600k up and running without overclock and further be solid for i7 6700k I will go for that.

i5 6600k + ASUS Z170-A = 370e
i5 4690k + ASROCK Extreme 3 = 345e

I think this is probably best way to describe my choices. I assume most of you would recommend for me to go for skylake ? Also does i5 6600k use more power from PSU comparing to i5 4690k ? I have 650w LC PSU and I don't have money for new one, that PSU was running i7 4770k + gtx970 for 2 years, I have in plan to add 970 to this cpu+mobo at one point but when that happen I will get new one. Just in case to confirm.

In theory, does HyperX 8GB Savage DDR4 2133MHz CL13 works with i5 6600k + ASUS Z170-A ?

Just for now, since it will use integrated gpu anyways for about 14-15 days. Then I will add one more 8gig stick and most likely 970 G1.

One more question, can I use i7 4770k stock cooler on i5 6600k ? Just to get him working, no overclock at all. I have in plan water cooling and all that fency stuff eventually.
