4790k Overclocking problem

Hey!

So i upgraded my 4770(non-k) to a 4790k.
The problem is, after i installed my new watercooler (Corsair H80i V2), it seems to cause a throttle on my cpu when 100% stress testing with Prime95. What it does, it goes for about 30sec stable, at 4500mhz, and suddenly it drops my multiplier down to x8 (800mhz) and then goes back to 4500mhz and x45 multiplier. I've gone back and forth with old cooler, and this new Corsair, and the Corsair seems to cause this problem, since this does not happen with my old Zalman. I've tried pretty much everything in my knowledge. And this is not caused by the temperature, because with aircooler, it goes all the way to 80degs and stays stable. With the watercooler it seems to throttle somewhere near 60degrees. The only difference between these two coolers, aircooler has 4pin connector, and watercooler has 3pin connector. The pump uses CPU_FAN pins, and is connected to MB via USB 2.0.

Motherboard: Asus H81M-PLUS
CPU: 4790k
Watercooler: Corsair H801 V2

Any ideas?

Download this from corsair and check the status of your new water cooler.

If you don't have it already download hwmonitor, you want to check the voltages and tempatures of your cpu to make sure its cooling off properly.

Read this here carefully, lets put the cpu clock speed back on default and put the turbo clock back on default settings.
Save the settings in bios and see what happens.

Im using hwmonitor for monitoring alredy, and Corsair Link is installed, it seems to be mostly for monitoring too, only settings u can actually change is Profile for fans, Quaiet, Balanced, Performance. So didnt find any help from Corsair Link. I have also read that forum, i think that wasnt about my problem. See, everything works, with a 4pinned aircooler, but as soon as i plug in the 3pin watercooler, it kind of seems to limit temp to 60.

CPU runs ok with default settings, it can handle the Prime95 and remain stable, but as soon as i go for 1.20V, 44x 100mhz, this problem appears.

As i mentioned, it lets my old aircooler go up to 80degrees celcius, but watercooler lowers my multiplier to 8x at some point. Somehow i got this feeling it has something to do with the temp, but im not sure. And it has to do something with the cooler, right? Same BIOS settings with both coolers, watercooler just throttles the multiplier down to 8x, and then tries again. And that goes on.

With the watercooler, temp NEVER gets up to 70.

edit: oh, and watercooler status seems all good, pump is rolling at 1950rpm, and the liquid temp is around 25 on idle, and about 40 on stress. And boy, have i checked the paste between cooler and CPU, again, and again, just to get it perfect. I'd say problem isnt there either.

I did contact them about this, waiting for their answer. I only went water cooling, because just to keep the CPU at 4.4ghz, the aircooler is working so hard, and being so noisy :/

Hmm I prefer if you keep it at 4.2ghz to prevent any more problems you have now.
Check back here and let us know what they tell you and recommend.
I find it strange that asus motherboard doesn't know how to control the multipliers correctly.
After changing out cooling methods, looked at other videos and some other peoples opinions about this cooler.
They never had a problem like this one, maybe overheating by accident or the pump being faulty by corsair.

Found out more about the problem. It seems that every OC software (Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, Asus AI Suite 3 etc.) are keeping my multipliers locked, and im missing some options, that other ppl have on videos i watched. Im not sure, but im starting to think that its my mobo thats holding me back atm. I know no that H series mATX mobo isnt ideal for overclocking anyways, but is it possible to OC with it? maybe. Im just assuming thats the only place for the problem to lurk at this point. I was rolling with Win10 when i first tested it, and right now im installing Win8, to give it a try. But im pretty sure im gonna have to do some mobo shopping later on today. Maybe a simple, cheap H-series mATX mobo isnt something that you should OC your CPU on.

I'll keep you posted how it goes on Win8, dont think its gonna be a much of a difference.
I actually have new Mobo(atx), case(atx), and powersupply in my shoppingcart already. So yeah.. "high hopes" 😀

Thanks for the tip! AsRock z87 OC Formula coming in 2 weeks. Hope that will do for a couple years. While waiting, im trying to solve why this mobo wont oc.

I asked if the z87 had 1.90 or later bios installed, they are selling it with "current" latest bios. So i guess its up to date.
+ if im correct, you dont need a CPU to flash AsRock z87 OC Formula, you just plug in the bios.cap via USB, and theres a button on mobo, so u can flash it without CPU, GPU or monitor. But nevertheless, i still have my 4770 if i run into a problemo :)
