Firstly let me start off by saying that I have a hyper 212 evo but unfortunately it did not come with the mounting hardware I need to set it up (waiting on CM to send them to me)

With the stock cooler while doing stress tests my cpu will skyrocket towards 85+ C. This worries me greatly so I never let it go past that. I have already taken the heatsink off, cleaned it thoroughly, and replaces it with arctic silver. This is driving me crazy because I need to be able to render videos and not worry about my cpu catching fire. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5

that is bad, but it doesn't surprise me because those heatsinks are so cheap that they should only be on i3 and lower.

I'd suggest undervolting the cpu, since you can overclock a lot on stock voltage, you could undervolt to save your cpu.
yeah definetely... clock down until you feel safe and stay there until you replace the cooler... 4790k... like what... 4ghz on a stock tini tiny cooler, no wonder it has trouble... they should sell them without coolers at this point, like the 2011 socket chips

I never knew the stock coolers for intel were so awful. I installed my 212 evo today and at 100% load it is in the low to mid 60's

somehow I expected more from Intel...but whatever..I'm happily rendering videos faster than I ever have before :)
