Dont know a lot about 486s, but I know Pentium overdrive chips were
made to upgrade them. The Ps were both quicker and also had extra
performance features. Not sure why though, can you not get something
better?

I once had an Intel DX4/100 running at 120Mhz - IIRC it involved setting
the CPU voltage and frequency jumpers on the motherboard to 'reserved'
settings.

Chances are your situation is similar, i.e. you will get further by
trying undocumented jumper settings than asking here, because we have
forgotten the details 🙂 OTOH, if you posted the brand and model of
your motherboard, it just might shake loose a cobweb or two.
