There's nothing you shouldn't believe about expreview. They are a major site in China and here in US.

More like 82% ;)

(1.3x1.4 - 1=0.82)

I guess I will wait for a non-reference design to come out, the stock one is indeed scary.... but good performance!! Now I only need to know how R700 performs....

From what I gather, these will be way too hot for xfire without an aftermarket cooler. For example, the one review used a thermaltake $50 to get the card down to normal ranges.

ATI was touting these as having more processing power per watt than the nvidia cards, but something seems messed up with the power consumption and resulting heat.

Well for me I decided to just stick with my 4850 that I ordered and maby xfire it with a 4870 down the road, maby with my next upgrade to nehalem. The price cant be beat though.

I was just about to order a 4850.... looks like I'm gonna be saving up a bit longer. I want that thang. GDDR5, Dual-Slot cooler, cutting edge.

Nice find.

It has a dual slot cooler as stock that pushes the hot air out of the case. If it was single slot I would be concerned but the case temps should be as good as or if not better than what they are if you had 4850 in xfire.

+1 I am excited to see where NV and ATI settle on prices. For the first circus act though, prices might be stacked for the first couple of weeks until stocks build up.

Not sure who these @ssclowns are but $457 better not stick.

Their are some "substantiated" guesses around the web for 4870 512mb for the first few weeks is around $370, and hardly any of them to boot. In any circumstance, these will be available at a high premium for all of 5 seconds after launch.

And again, we probably won't see the 1024mb version for a long while.

This is very exciting, suffice to say, Nvidia really f*ed this one up. ATI pulled a rabbit out of its ass. It took everyone by surprised, no one was expecting 800SPs, which must account for the performance better than the 260 for 100$ less, there must be some catch. I usually dont become enamored with hardware, but this 4870 is one exception. Great card though, I was not expecting such performance. looks like Nv made the 2900 mistake. BTW, anyone have rv740 benchmakrs, they seem impressive from what i;ve heard.

Although 800SP helped, the biggest difference on the RV770 is 40TMU at high clock speeds compared to GT200. It's FP16, FP32 fillrate higher than GT200 although it's bilinear fillrate is much lower.

I was thinking of the 4850 review I read earlier and then this review mentioning the heat. So, for the reference card are you agreeing that a xfire is not possible with two 4850 stock cooling, but you think it will be possible with two 4870 stock cooling and factory settings?

I'm hoping to see some new reviews on both cards after some more testing and hopeful software updates for the fan controls.

Playable framerates on High in crysis with an HD4870 at 1680x1050 with 4xAA. :O. I'm awed up alright. I hope this is legit.

It isn't impossible, people are doing 4850 xfire right now. You just need to make sure the cooling in your case is up to par so the rest of your temps don't get out of control. For the dual slot GPUs where the air gets kicked out instead of lingering in the case, you don't have to worry as much.

Just noticed that. Looks like I will be OC'ing the shiz outta my e8400.

EDIT:

I hope that has something to do with that 4Ghz quad. That's ridiculous. My Arctic Silver 5 'modded' 7900GS only hits 75ºC under full load. Looks like I'm going to be ordering a lot of cooling fans lol.

This was well worth the wait for me, can't wait till tomorrow.

Hopefully AMD will pull yet another rabbit out of its ass and surprise us with the 1GB 4870, at launch. :D
