4890 atomic vs 285.

I would say that they are about the same, the 4890 may be a tiny bit faster, but they will exchange blows.
The price is really the deciding factor here.

Sapphire's 4890 atomic is faster, but when both are overclocked they should be about the same. So far my best overclock on a Sapphire 4890 Toxic edition is 1124 Mhz core and 1178 Mhz memory. With three of them in crossfire it is 1108 MHz core by 1138 Mhz memory.

When I compare one 4890 Toxic at 1100 MHz / 1100 Mhz to a GTX 285 at 794 MHz core and 2568 Mhz memory the 4890 comes out the winner in many games but the GTX 285 is so damn close it doesn't matter (usually less than 1 FPS). Don't take this as too concrete as they are only rough benchmarks.

What voltages are you running at to achieve those clocks?

The Sapphire Vapor/Toxic/Atomic editions use top-grade jap capacitors and have the voltage bumped up. I would love to tell you what it is exactly, but GPUZ doesn't read them right...

The GTX 285 is a non-factory overclocked version that does very well. I had it watercooled once and got over 800 Mhz on the core, but it wont do that on air.

Get the Toxic edition, the atomic isn't worth the extra $50. As you can see they overclock like they are reference GPUs.

+1
Also, if you REALLY want a 1000MHz on the core, you can simply overclock it a little further. :D

Or to 1100 Mhz+ if you get a good one! The Toxic edition is the EXACT SAME THING as the Atomic edition with all the same modifications. The vapor edition has the same modifications too accept it has a less efficient cooler.

Not all toxic's will do 1000mhz on the stock 1.4volts. Mine is only stable to 980mhz, 1ghz requires 1.4375 volts to have no artifacts in ati tool :(

That's odd. You've only been able to overclock 20MHz. I thought these cards were left with a little head room for if you wanted to overclock it further.

o.o i've never heard of a toxic and atomic cards x.x, never seen em on newegg, when did they come out? i was plannin on making my build with just 2 vanilla 4890's, but those fans look interesting , any worth changing? (was planning on getting 2 vanilla XFX cards and OC'ing em a bit )

Toxic and Atomic are just what Sapphire calls their pre-overclocked cards with aftermarket coolers on them. Similar to EVGA's "Superclocked" and "FTW" editions (Except for the aftermarket coolers, but the stock coolers are probably the best cooler for the GTX 260, GXT 275, and GTX 280/285 without extending over more than 2 slots).
You won't be able to buy a 4890 Atomic edition since they sold out almost an hour after being introduced to the market. lol
The Toxic edition may be the same, but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

eh, no need for atomic if you could just OC the toxic up to the same core clocks. Ofcourse, it all matters how lucky you are :p

So, like wow, these cards are for 250-ish, factory OC'd, AND aftermarket coolers? Apart from the 200 dollar XFX vanilla cards, these seem very good o.o.

And the superclocked and FTW editions are so totally overpriced...thats one of the reasons why im using ATI for my first build :p reliable and cheap! :D

i dont think all toxic's would overclock to atomic levels so if one wants atomic speeds, then get an atomic. dont rely on overclocking.

The Atomic edition uses the Vapor-X cooler, as does the Toxic edition....

If no one noticed, the Atomic 4890s are out-of-stock. I assume that the only way to get them now would be on ebay.

EDIT: Found a really good deal on zipzoomfly.com for a HIS 4890 while searching for the 4890 Atomic: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10010252&prodlist=celebros

The toxic is still a very good card though it will probably be hit or miss if its going to reach atomic speeds as those are surely specially binned. Even at Toxic speeds the card competes favorably with a 285 and beats it out in many tests.
