4gb and BSOD

Hi, I recently bought a new system which had a Asus P5K premium, E6600 and 2gb of OCZ PC6400 ddr2 ram (platinum revision 2), with a 8800GTS 320mb gpu.

I have recently bought another 2gb of the same ram because things were not as snappy as I'd been hoping for under vista.

I understood before I did this that i'd probably not register all of it because of address issues with 32bit vista, however with the extra ram in I'm getting many BSOD with memory dumps etc. which disappear when I remove the extra ram. I think heat might be an issue, as when I removed the ram it felt very hot and my MB temps are always in the 40s whereas my chip is usually reading 20! I have reasonable case ventilation could I try lowering the case temps by increasing the fan speed and lowering the room temperature.

The other reason i suspect heat is because there is very little room between the ram sticks due to the heatspreaders on them which i think might be compounding the issue.

Thanks for the replies, I've tried that and it says that the update does not apply, first with and then without the extra ram in place.

Any ideas?

Does not apply??? May be that patch is already installed?

There is two version of the patch, one for 32bits and the other for 64bits. Don't know why the fix is saying that? It worked for me and a lot of people.

I have the same problem, blue screen and IRQL error before I even get into windows. However, my OS is Windows XP, can anyone help me with this ? I assume this patch is not meant for XP

You could not install the patch too?

the patch installed fine..... I could now get into windows, but IE would error out and eventually I still got Blue screen.....

one thing that can cause some pain for lots of ram is setting memory usage to system and not programs. It was a common tweak but it does not get along with some hardware/software. ATI driver really mess up with this.....

Not sure if it applies to vista but anyway

Right click My Computer => Properties
Click Advanced => Performance, Settings
Now under the Advanced tab of Performance Options
Make sure Memory usage is set to Programs and not System Cache. It breaks allot of drivers and apps, but some tweaks enable it....

Shot in the dark but it has caused many a BSOD....

Concur w/amnotanoobie. Create a memtest86 bootable disk and test memory, If memory fails, then try upping your FSB voltage slightly. Have both XP Pro and Vista Bus (Both 32 Bit versions). Had no problem with with operating system using 4 Gigs ram - did not have to load any patch. Did have mem errors at first, corrected with upping FSB Voltage.

UBCD(ultimate boot cd) is a better option since it has lots of tests(Memtest86 is under the motherboard tools menu)....

I would recommend upping the Vdimm(Ram voltage) instead of FSB.
Check with you ram manufacturer for the right voltage....For OCZ its 2.1. On some boards 4 sticks need extra voltage 2.2 should be ok.

I recommended the Cache option as it can cause problems....and some people do not even know its on(lets say they used a tweaking tool like cacheman).
