I have acquired a dell dimension e310 and would like to up the memory. Dell says it will only support 2gb, however I have read that some have installed 4gb, and there is an e310 listed on ebay in which there is a 2gb stick populating one of the two slots (The bios screen is pictured). Will this system support 4gb (2gbx2) with a bios update? Any 4 gb success stories?

I have Dell Dimension 3100 E310 and I just upgraded to 2x2 GB of Ram (4 GB TOTAL)...with no problem. System reports that its is using 3 point something gigs and I am assuming the rest is being used by the onboard video card. I installed this memory with the original A03 Bios and it worked fine. Dell does not always tell the truth about upgrades. They want you to purchase a new machine instead of upgrading your old one. As for the CPU....Intel reports that the 915G chipset will support up to a Pentium 4 3.8Ghz...so long as you remain with the Prescot line of processors....which is what's in mine....I haven't had any luck upgrading my CPU yet ....I tried installing a 3.8GHz processor and I recieve a message saying "processor detected" but nothing else happens....I even upgraded the bios to A04 but to no avail. Anyone with any ideas is welcome to comment. Hope this helps.

I just installed 4 GB RAM (2X2 Crucial) in my Dell E310 and it seems to be working fine. When I go to "Computer" it says 4GB, but when I go to "System" it says 4 GB Memory Installed (2.99 GB Useable). My E310 came with 512 MB and year before last I upgraded to 2 GB. I haven't had any problems with it accepting either upgrade.

A 64 bit operating system should show almost the entire 4GB. However a 32 bit operating system should only report something around 3.2 at max. Take out the Microsoft windows calculator switch it to scientific mode and you will demonstrate to yourself that the maximum number of unique 32 bit address spaces that can be seen is about 3.3 billion. Remember to knock off a couple of hundred thousand for the operating system's own use.
