Hi Toms Hardware. I'll try to make this sound intelligent.
I'm playing rally games (currently WRC7) on triple 49" 4k TVs. Using Nvidia surround at a resolution of 11520x2160 @60htz. GPU is a GTX Titan X Maxwell.

Now the game can be selected in the display settings to output this resolution above. But with the desktop resolution set to the same and the game in full screen very low FPS low 40's is only possible with all low graphics settings and post processes turned off. It actually looks ok'ish as a stationary picture, just unplayable at these frame rates. Need 60 FPS.

So after outlining all that.

If I select the 4k game output of 11520x2160 @ 60htz and play on 4k capable screens set to surround resolution of 5760x1080 or even 5760x1440 I can set medium to high graphics and some post processing like FXAA, depth of field etc turned on and get a solid 60FPS Vsync on and over 90FPS Vsync off. And the graphics quality of the game looked incredible.

"what's the Bl**dy question" I hear you cry.

Question is, "What am I actually seeing on the 4k screens? Am I seeing triple 4k resolution (output from the game) or am I seeing 1080p resolution that has been downscaled from 4k by my GPU and wasting resources.? Sorry for the long intro, just I guess it needed outlining. Cheers.

I'm playing with a game output of 11520x2160 @60htz to a 3 screen surround (nvidia) resolution of 5760x1080

If I set the desktop to 4k and run the game in same resolution even with the Titan x gpu I'm getting a massive fps hit as I said in the OP, as a stationary picture the game graphics are amazing, but try to drive fast fps drops to mid 40's and get huge stutter. Annoyingly this game WRC7 is the current go-to rally game, it's just seriously heavy on the graphics. DirtRally in triple 4k with high settings will still hit 90+ vsync off. New issue now is the game won't allow me to run the 4k res at 60htz it defaults to 24htz which is unplayable.

OK so this is what I see in the advanced display settings. Note the different resolution from desktop Resolution to Active Display resolution. It takes me quite a while to get the GPU to do this. there must be a quick way. I just haven't found it yet.

With the pc in this configuration, I can play the game at 11520x2160 @ 60htz and get 90FPS with high to very high graphics and post process, and it looks amazing very high quality and detail.

The TVs' info now says they are at 3840x2160, so x3 is 11520x2160. Now, if I do the "normal thing and set the desktop resolution to 11520x2160 as well as the game I get 32FPS with low in-game graphics settings.

What is it I have actually done?

The desktop resolution is still at 5760x1080, but the game is playing at the 4k resolution and the 3 TV activate to the same resolution of 11520x2150.
