Hey folks,

I recently built a new x99 PC and have actually been getting really poor performance out of it so I wanted to get some advise on what may be wrong. Basic specs 5930k, x99 deluxe, 16GB ddr4, 780tiDCUII.
Funny enough I'm actually getting worse performance out of this than my old PC which had a 780DCUII and 3930k.

I'm running most of the latest games especially far cry 4 which struggles to get 15FPS on nvidia settings at 1440p. Though looking at benchmarks running similar hardware if not worse are getting much more than that with the same options.
Moreover last night I turned FC4 on to get into the game and met with a out of memory error plastered on the screen then it went away after a few moments. Now I'm assuming that's referring to Vram right?

That brings me to my question, I have a 4k Bravia tv so I'd like to run games in 4k. What parts should I change to achieve this? Sticking to always maxed settings, 30fps I'm happy with. Would I be better off grabbing a 980 or Titan black? Really want to get the 980 classified but am reluctant because of the 4gb limit. Black would solve that but it's not as powerful now is it? Also 400 more expensive.

Also wanted to note the RAM I have is really cheap bottom spec DDR4 as that's all that was available at the time everything was sold out. If I upgraded to much higher spec DDR4 rip jaws for instance would that make much of a difference?

Thanks!

Why are you trying to chase 4K, it is far too much to maintain than what people think. This is the main reason why 99% of game company's only produce games in 1080p with up-scaling.

Stick with 1440p at Ultra on a 27" and you will be more than happy... I run 3 27" monitors with a really crazy system and I would never tell anyone to try 4K.

But like the above poster said check all drivers and updates.

Thanks for the responses. Drivers are the latest just updated 2 days ago. I've got GeForce experience to auto check for updates. Bios the same.

Yeah I agree 4k is more money than it's worth but it seems a waste to have a 4k TV and not utilise it.

I think it's something to do with assassins creed unity but for some reason my card only runs at like 700Mhz when playing that game and gpu utilisation is no higher than 70%. Not sure if that's something wrong with my PC, or unity being a bug ridden mess. FC4 seems ok, 1300Mhz 100% utilisation. It's just the constant frame drops freezing and out of memory errors making it unplayable.

If you have your old monitor, hook that back up and max it out see if you get the same effects as with the 4K monitor. If you do then it may be problems with the card. If you don't get problems with the older monitor setup, then the card you have is struggling to push the 4K monitor.

If you are just playing games then more RAM will really do nothing, unless you are running multiple programs.

Now if no problems are apparent with the system run a MEMTEST and try PC-Doctor, PC Diagnostics and/or Ultra-X to stress test the system to see if any errors pop up.

I'm running fire strike now trying to remember what my old PC got. I'll pop the results up once its finished.

Unfortunately I don't have the old monitor. Just does not seem right such a powerful PC struggling to run games at 1440P. There's something definitely wrong with the PC when I first got it was constantly turning itself off for about a half hour or so first time I turn it on for the day then it would be fine for the rest of the day. I took it back to the shop who built it they had it for 2 weeks and came back saying nothing wrong with it, and it hasn't done it since. Still something is not right, i mean I use to get roughly 60FPS on metro last light maxed out 1440P on my old PC, my new I struggle to maintain half that even though this PCs significantly more powerful. Only part of my old PC that was higher was I had 32GB of memory but that shouldn't make a difference right?

Not more memory as such, faster memory. I was going to grab the Gskill Ripjaws 3000Mz RAM but no one had any DDR4 memory in stock, same with the motherboard they were sold out everywhere so I ended up going with the 2133 instead. Still same amount, 16GB, just lower speed.

Tossing up whether I should grab a EVGA 980 classified now, or wait till next year in hopes a new card, one with more than 4GB of VRAM releases. They have to release SOMETHING, i mean there's no way in hell The Witcher 3 is going to run at 4K with one 980!
So frustrating, we've finally got next gen consoles, and developers are able to slightly stop giving us crappy console ports, but there's not a single card out there that can really show us that full potential. And SLIs not a option because most games don't have profiles on launch, and VRAM does not scale.
For once were not limited by the software, and when that veil is lifted, the hardware manufactures decide its time to lie down.

1500 fire strike returned. Knew something was not right, looking at my benchmarks online its listing tons of other results from other people with exact same hardware as me and there getting 2800! There was actually a new BIOS and driver update this morning so I did both of those and now FC4 barely runs at all I can't get it above 15FPS, and that's lowering it to 1080P, 1440P runs below 10 where before it was roughly round 30. Looks like nvidia has botched the latest drivers, uninstalled them and reinstalled the ones optimised for AC unity and now FC4s back to 30FPS. Still don't understand why I'm getting such poor performance though, might see if I can do a fresh OS install during the week see if that helps.

Sigh, no such luck. Did a complete wipe of the OS and everything, re downloaded all the drivers, and still same problems. The new drivers still wreaking havoc too. Might see if I can take the PC down to the shop who built it for me see if they can figure out what's going on. I'm starting to think it's a faulty card, when I purchased it the store said its a "display model" and that's all they had in stock so I had to take that. The X99 deluxe board I bought off them was faulty and had to take that back, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the card is too.

I hope you solve your problems. 4GB is plenty, for what really eats up the graphics ram is anti-aliasing and similar functions which really aren't needed much with the high resolution screens. Do not get Titans, they are professional graphics cards sold to gamers that have abilities that are wasted. For driving 4K displays you are going to have to go SLI to even come close to making a game smooth. Two 970s are your best buy, two 980s will give top performance, but that last 15% will cost some bucks over 970s.

Don't worry about RAM speed. Four channels of DDR4 is stupid fast and overkill for gaming.

Thanks for the advise. I'm going to take my system to place of purchase tomorrow get them to look at it for me somethings definitely not right. Is there any tests I can run myself to see if it's a faulty GPU? I purchased 2 parts from this place the motherboard and the GPU, motherboard DOA with a over voltage error and now I'm getting much lower benchmarks than others with same specs as me.

Starting to wish I stuck with the 4 series CPUs instead of 5. Would of saved me a heck of allot of time and hassle running around looking for parts in stock, and would of saved me a extra 500+ bucks and could of put that towards another 780ti. I was hoping the DDR4 and higher spec CPUs would make a big difference in performance but it doesn't seem that way. Oh well, the power of hindsight.

Think I'll hold off till Feb next year once The Witcher 3s out then I'll decide what I want to do upgrades wise. Hopefully by then we'll have something powerful enough for 4K on its own, if not then at least something with more than 4GB of VRAM. I always like running AA at max I find it gives a nice sheen to everything like placing a coat of lacquer after you varnish the outdoor furniture.

Just got it back they say there's nothing wrong with it. I just noticed a store near me has the 780tis really cheap ATM but they only have the gigabyte Ghz edition. Theres no problems in SLI one of the Ghz editions to the DCUII i already have is there? Core clocks a little higher on the gigabyte too, 1085 instead of 1020.

How long ago were the items purchased? Because it sounds to me like they are trying to push the fault away. If you are having issues with the products producing the way they should, then you have defective products.

Once way to combat places that try and push the blame, have them install the items and show you that it works like it advertises. If the items after their install does the same as it did for you then there is an issue they need to take care of. If the system works right off the bat then you know it is a installation problem on your end.

In the end if the PC works after they build it then, you can offer a builders fee as it could be cheaper then buying new parts and basically throwing the others to the side.

Purchased the system for the store to build about 9 weeks ago, took them 5 weeks to deliver it though because i went with X99 and DDR4 memory and motherboards were extremely difficult to find.I was originally going to get the aforementioned faster RAM and the Asus Rampage V motherboard but neither were going to be in stock for another month plus so I downgraded. I'll wait till the weekend and take it down somewhere else get them to test it for me see what they say. My stupid razor mamba mouse is not working now either, won't turn on using battery even though its been on charge for like 30 hours now I have to use it wired.

Nvidia are not much help either, I sent them a support request email and they keep pushing theres nothing wrong with the card its game related issues. How can it be game related issues when even 3D mark fire strike is getting really poor performance? Not to mention its not only one game, but all the games I've got installed are doing it to me so it can't possibly be a game specific issue.

When you got your computer back did the builder give you the original disk for the vid card? I ask because sometimes you can remove all vid drivers insert the disk and load the 1st assigned driver, test, then update.

Sometimes this process works.

Yes I still have the disc might try that. I requested all the boxes and accessories back so if I needed to return something, or sell it I have everything. Funny I thought I should try update my drivers again last night but found I actually am running the latest ones, I could of swore I rolled them back to the AC optimised ones. The original issue I mentioned with them above then where the card was only running at 500Mz and like 30% utilisation, i noticed the same thing happened the day AC unity came out and I updated to those drivers the card did that, then when I turned my PC on the next day that problem was solved it was then running normally around 1200Mz and 99% utilisation. What would be causing that, just seems a bit coincidental for 2 driver updates to be doing it now, and only for the first time I run a game after that it seems to go back to normal.
