4K Gaming Memory

Solution
2GB of RAM is really ideal, won't have too many issues, when doing 1080p.
With that said, with a little work adjusting graphics settings it shouldn't have too bad of a time running 1440p, the reason being that disabling features like AA drastically reduce RAM usage and demands on the rest of the card, so 1440p would be workable.

When you get up to 4k, 4GB is really the minimum advisable for gaming, because the demands on the RAM are so intesne. With a card like the R9 270x, with 4GB of RAM you can likely attain 30FPS at 4k using no AA and dropping settings to about medium. So the performance won't be so great, and at that point it will likely look worse than 1080p because of the reduced graphics settings.

With all that said, if you...

Can I do 1440p gaming? TIA

With all that said, if you already own an R9 270x its probably something you can live with until you can upgrade the GPU too.

When it comes to running games with good frame rates at high or maxed settings, its really recommended to get nothing lower than an R9 280x, and even then adjusting settings is mandatory for best results, just throwing it on maxed out and letting it go won't go so well. So if you are considering a new GPU too, here are the only cards on market currently worth consideration.

AMD: R9 280x, R9 290, R9 290x, R9 295x2, AMD 300 series when available
Nvidia: GTX 970, GTX 980, Titan (Any)

Please note while Nvidia has other cards capable of doing the job, the reason I don't list them is because the new GTX 970 and GTX 980 have basically made them not worth consideration. Nvidia's Titan is only worth considering because of its larger amount of RAM, otherwise it also wouldn't be.
