4K LG TV and GTX 970, overscan, blurry text and flickering

Hi,

I've bought a 4k TV to use as my primary monitor since I'm a developer I thought the extra screen size would be great. Everything is set up but I still have a couple of annoying issues I can't seem to solve. Note, all drivers are up to date, firmware of the TV is up to date and Nvidia drivers as well.

TV: LG 42ub820v
CPU: Intel I7 4790
RAM: 32 GB DDR3
GPU: MSI GTX 970
OS: WIndows 8.1

1. Flickering, this is not the normal type of screen flickering but only things like the Task Manager, certain windows, drop down boxes, UI kinda stuff. Movies and Games work great without a single flicker. I can fix this issue by changing the refresh rate to 30 HZ but that makes the mouse pointer feel slow, anything above 30 causes this strange flicker. 50, 59, 60 hz. (I'm using a High Speed HDMI cable)

2. Overscan, There seems to be an overscan of 10-20 pixels on all sides except the top. Setting option "Aspect ratio" to "Just Scan" on my TV allows me to fix it when booting but once windows loads the option is disabled and I can't adjust it so it also uses "Just scan". Kinda odd.

3. Blurry text, This is the least of my issues since it's probably related to the overscan and stretching. Already tried changing the sharpness and using ClearType.

Overall, I tried all possible options disabling all filters I could find but I'm not sure what I should look for.

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask.

That's tough. Have you tried using a different HDMI cable?

It doesn't really make any sense. Your video card and TV both have HDMI 2.0, so there's no reason why it should be doing anything like that. Either it's your HDMI cable, or the TV just isn't optimized for PC use.

I did try a DVI -> HDMI cable since I have no other HDMI cable laying around but still the same result. I also configured the HDMI input as PC in the TV itself which didn't do anything. I'll buy another HDMI cable to see if that does anything.

Cool. I hate to say spend more money, but HDMI's are pretty cheap nowadays.

Like I said before, mess around in Nvidia Control Panel to resize your desktop to fit the screen. there may even be some options in there that can help with your issue.

Okay, so I got another hdmi cable which fixes the flickering and it runs fine at 3840 x 2160 @ 60 hz. But when I adjust the desktop size in the Nvidia control panel it does something strange. After I fix the overscan and press OK the screen becomes stretched and pink with green, there is no way to indentify the cursor so I have to wait for things to revert. Do you know what's causing that? Do you want a picture of the screen?

No it looks more like 32:9 since the horizontal is stretched a lot and the Revert window which is normally at the center of a screen is only half visible on the right side. Notice my edit of my previous post about the 30hz thing.

Yeah I saw. Your kind of in uncharted territory here. Buying a 4K monitor is completely different than buying a 4K TV for PC usage. I've never seen a TV that picked up a PC signal perfectly right off the bat, and the fact that you have a 4K TV with the new HDMI 2.0 standard on both it and your GPU puts you in an largely untested area.

I have a feeling that the distorted color is from the aspect ratio being changed. How badly does the edge overlap at stock settings? The photo you posted didn't show all edges.

Well it's not that bad at stock settings, it's half of the mouse cursor when I place it at the left side of my screen. So I would say about 5 - 10 pixels. Am I right to assume that this is a nvidia driver problem? And that it might get fixed by nvidia some day?

It's no driver problem. TV's are different than monitors. Monitors are meant to interpret the signal from a PC and automatically adjust to fit. A TV isn't. Like I mentioned above, I've never seen a TV pick up a signal from a PC perfectly the first time.

When something is maximized, can you still see the icons in the top right corner (minimize, maximize, close)?

Well, this article seems kinda familiar to your issues if you wanna read about it, at least some of it, especially the Hz.

That's why getting a TV with DP is better, but there's only one option for that, and most people don't like them, so I can't blame you .

Edit: Also, a while back, I knew a guy also with a LG TV but it was pretty high quality, and I think he also had Nvidia GPUs, since he had to use HDMI 2.0 also and Nvidia is the only ones that has it right now and before. So it "may" be important to have a high quality TV to get what you are promised for, there is always a reason for putting the price too low. I had one of those Samsung UN406950 TVs before and it was $1,000, I thought it was high quality but it was not, giving me strange issues and the specs are not as they appear, even though $1,000 is quite a lot. So I never went below $1,500 after that and just decided to get a TV with DP instead.

Alright good know, thanks! :)
Yes I can still easily see those buttons.

Ah those problems with the cursor is exactly the same as I have. That's a good read! Thanks

I'll try adjusting it some more to see if i'm not too much bothered with the overscan or else I'll just return it to the store. Would a normal monitor be a better alternative? since a TV of $1,500 or more is above my budget It seems like 27/28 inch would be too small with a 4k resolution.

Thanks a lot both of you, I've read a lot of other threads on the Nvidia forum and elsewhere which all came to the same conclusion. Which is that with a TV you just don't know what to expect, some people had problems with their cursor being pink. Others had problems with aspect ratio's like me. It seems that almost all tv's have a overscan of 3% which you may or may not be able to turn off (This is probably where the quality plays an very important role like -Lone- said).

So I decided to follow Brillis Wuce's advice and I'm going to buy a 4k monitor which won't have all these problems/bugs. Mabye once the 4k platform is mature I'll take a look at a 4k TV again.

Hey I just seen your post, I have a Vizio P series 4k television. On my set there are 5 HDMI ports. The 5th port is rated at 4k 60Hz. The rest are rated at 30Hz. If my computer is hooked up to the 60Hz port, to display will randomly do all kinds of wonky stuff. I later found that this does not occur if I am hooked into a 30Hz port and running my resolution on 1080 or 4k. Anything else causes problems. I'm thinking that there are a couple of reasons for this. My graphics card is a GTX 770, output 4k, but only up to 30Hz (From what I have seen). And the TV is designed to input 4k resolution, or upscale typical set top box, blue Ray player, ect. resolutions.
So in conclusion, try multiple ports, multiple resolutions, and try turning v sync on or off, ect.
In general I agree with most of the other post, you just don't know how well a tv is going to work until you get a chance to check it out. Currently I am very pleased with the Vizio. Good luck

Greetings! I recently bought lg 40ub800v which has 4k/60hz hdmi inputs and nvidia msi gtx 970 gaming. Both linked with hdmi 2.0 certified cable. i also get a similar strange result when i go above 30hz at 4k. My issue is a green screen only when i open 3d applications for 1 sec as they load/or when i alt tab, and after that 1 sec everything well. And 1 more strange issue, my cursor when it goes on a typing box area(like internet browsers url box), and from pointer converts to a I, This I apears with pink color. these 2 issues only apear when i set above 30hz.
