I cant find a definitive answer on which kind of monitor I should get for gaming... i play all sorts of games from skyrim, the witcher 3, to battlefield 1.

1440p in my opinion, much easier to run compared to 4k. A 60fps high settings 4k machine is pretty pricey.
If you want your games to look nice - if you play RPG or survival type games - get a 4K monitor. If you want your games to have good performance - if you play FPS or car racing type games - get the 1440p monitor.
You don't list your hardware specs, specifically your GPU power. I have a 1440p monitor (Dell U2713HM) and run W3 and B1 with overclocked SLI 970s (equal to stock 980 SLI performance). With Witcher 3 and maxed out settings minus Hairworks, I average 80FPS with minimum frames dipping down below 60FPS at times. BF1 is better at 90FPS average with minimums dipping into the 70s.
My point? You will need a LOT of GPU power to run games above 100FPS at 1440p, let alone consistently hitting 144FPS to match 144Hz monitor speed. With that said, I'd rather have smoother gameplay at 1440p and higher FPS than higher resolution at lower FPS. I've gamed on both 4K at 60Hz/60FPS and at 1440p at 120Hz/120FPS. The smoother gameplay wins IMO.
