Hello,

Have just come accross this amazing monitor on eBay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-U28D590-UHD-Monitor-28-4K-3840-x-2160-1ms-TN-panal-HDMI-Display-Port-/121283686443

It is a 4K display (i.e 4 x 1080p) and believe it or not, has a 60HZ refresh rate when using displayport 1.2, not to mention a 1ms response time. Okay, so its a TN panel, but I am not a photographer so colours are a fair sacrifice for me (compared to IPS).

I currently have a 27" monitor which is a shameful 1080p (i know, bad size monitor for the pixels). I bought this huge monitor only because when playing games on my PC i prefer to use the xbox360 controller (I prefer console type gaming, on a PC because of mods etc).

Okay, so here is my dilemma. The 4K monitor is only 1 inch larger than my current monitor and I am very worried about the text/PPI in windows when using a 4K display. What are your thoughts on this?

I know 4K will need a beefy system and that's okay, I intend to run the 780 ti in SLI (currently only have one)

Gaming should therefore be 'okay', but I am only concerned about the text and UI being incredily small on such a high resolution. Windows does a great job with the PPI / UI scaler, but for some programs this is not going to work.

Just incase this is needed, I am running Windows 8.1 (made it look just like Win7) and have the following hardware:

Current monitor: Viewsonic 27" 1080p
HDD: 3TB Seagate 7200
HDD2: 3TB WD 5200
SDD: 240GB Crucial M500
CPU: 3570K at 4.4ghz
GPU: GTX 780 TI
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600
PSU: Corsair HX850

Yay or Nay on the 4K?

Thanks

Yeah to be honest I would rather wait than buy from Overclockers. Nothing against them, just don't know anything about them.
I got the three emails from Amazon today with three different dates, 2 were in July and 1 was in June - I honestly don't think they have a clue themselves.

I am just going to stick with good old 1080p for now until these 4K badboys are actually released.

Such a shame though - disappointing with Amazon being this unreliable but what can you do. I've noticed some reviews on the item aswell from other unhappy pre-purchasers (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-U28D590D-inch-Ultra-Monitor/product-reviews/B00IJS6PCC/ref=dpx_acr_txt?showViewpoints=1)

Guys I have just had a thought. If you haven't already cancelled your pre-order with Amazon, don't! Amazons pre-order policy means that you will only ever pay the lowest price that it is available whilst it is on pre-order. At this time, that is £480. However I can see that when the monitor comes into stock in a month or two the price and jumping up due to high demand. The fact that the monitor currently has unavailable and doesn't list the price makes me think this is a very good possibility. If you cancel your preorder then change your mind at a later date and decide to buy it, you could end up paying more. A lot more.

Just to keep everyone updated, I have decided to scrap the Samsung 4K monitor (for now).

Right now, my attention has gone to this baby: http://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-34UM95

Its a 34" ultra wide 3440 x 1440 with a IPS panel. Not quite 4K, I think its in the middle of 1440p and 4K which is probably better for now.

Only problem is the price..currently around £800 in the UK - if the monitor (or something similar) is priced sensibly under £500, I would surely pick it up.

That's a lot of money considering the vertical pixel count is only the same as a 1440p display. I believe LinusTechTips just reviewed this. It's not really higher resolution than a 1440p screen, more like 2x 1440p screens side by side but without the bezel.

it is alot of money, I would never expect to pay the current price, but if it was around £400, like current (branded with real warranty) 1440p ones, I think thats pretty awesome.

The 4K monitor is just as good, but personally I deal with excel and multiple windows alot so the ultra wide would be handy. The resolution would also be the sweet spot IMO.

Well, I guess both monitors are unavailable right now - I will just have to wait for now and stick to 1080p. On a side note, i have just pre ordered Watch dogs Deluxe edition for PC for £36.00 :)

Hey all - so I have decided to stick with the 4K Samsung..

I actually ordered a 1440p QNIX on ebay.. but decided minutes after paying, why have 1440p with 8ms (albeit with 96hz) when you can have 2160p.

I am going to stick with 4K - It may not be this samsung one, as the release date is getting a little silly. There are ASUS and AOC ones coming out too, both have pilot, swivel etc too (even VESA). But lets be honest, the Samsung is a beauty and we will all probs choose this one!

I was about to pre order on Overclockers, but I refuse to pay their inflated prices. £499.99 is fair enough as they are first in the UK - but the £8 for delivery just made me say no to the greed.

I will hold out until Amazon or a respected retailer such as Dabs, Scan or CCL have a 4K monitor with 60hz for under £499

:pt1cable:

Hey people - so I am still awaiting the Samsung 4K monitor and just checked out overclockers.

Suprise suprise, they have changed their pre-order date from 26th May to 2nd June.

Goes against everything they said:

'OcUK will be the first in the UK to get official UK version of this monitor by upto nearly a month. We are expecting our delivery the last week of May. None of our competitors will get stock until mid-end of June as we have an exclusive arrangement with Samsung. This monitor is one of the best 4k displays available and OcUK will have it before any competitor by upto at least two weeks. Pre-order with confidence from ourselves on this stunning Samsung U28D590 28" 4k 60Hz 1ms Gaming Widescreen LED Monitor.'

I will continue to wait until Amazon sell the item.

On a side note, I purchased a QNIX from Korea as I am just anxious to upgrade from 1080p to atleast something until 4K is out properly. Big mistake, the PCB board inside is faulty and was showing red artifacts all over the right hand side of the screen. The seller (accessorieswhole) is sending me a replacement PCB, hopefully it works. (Have already waited 1.5 weeks and PCB still hasn't come..).

I have this monitor and it's nice at everything. My problem is that it's a TN monitor and if you really like very good colours then don't get this monitor. IPS 1080p or 1440p will get you better quality in games than TN 4k, I've seen it myself. 4k helps alot thought on crysis 3 and many other jaggy cornered games. Also this monitor is alot better then almost all of the other TN monitors out there. As I said above, don't get this monitor if you want high image quality on games or anything else, ips monitors will get you better off there.

Well, I see what you're saying by IPS usually being superior to TN. But most of these high end 4k monitor with "TN" panels are not your conventional TN panels found on those cheap 1080p ones. The TN monitors on the 4k monitors are spec'd with the same color production of true 8-bit color, just vertical viewing will be limited as there might be slight coloring tinting. I'm not usually looking at my monitor from the side or floor though so this feature has so effect on me. I do however use a IPS 1440p and love it, but had high end TN monitors that I was just as happy with.

I have heard it has some kind of 10bit support? isnt that crazy? probably not true.. must be something weird.
It does look nice - both the picture and the monitor itself. LinusTechTips made a video about it, compared to an Asus monitor, and i feel like the samsung destroyed it completely.

Well it uses the same dithering process that cheap monitors with 6-bit use that can't natively deliver 8-bit. The samsung monitor is true 8-bit with FRC dithering in order to achieve the effect the eye is seeing 10bit color. True 10-bit monitors cost an upwards of $3000. The Samsung is really just 8-bit in my opinion because frc dithering never meets up to the "real thing". Don't get me wrong, 8-bit is all you need for professional tasks. There is no media out there that can be appreciated by someone who has a 10-bit display yet. Even blu-ray is limited to 8-bit color. 4K is more readily available then 10-bit color is surprisingly. :) I saw linus review the monitor too and looked really good. I am personally waiting out for Lenovo's new 4K monitor as it will have an ergonomic stand and fully glossy screen. I love glossy screens!

I purchased this monitor but I am going to return it. Yes, the resolution is amazing but I find a few things that I don't like. First the stand is not adjustable at all but most importantly, the colors on the TN panel are washed out when I compare it to my old NEC monitor. The colors change depending on how you look at the monitor and even a slight angle horizontal or vertical will change the color. I am going to wait for another 4K monitor that uses newer technologies of the screen so it doesn't have this effect.

How about the Asus P(b?)287q, it has a great stand, and is apparently based on the same panel but with anti-flickering technology ^^ If it dips down to samsung price, it will be a sure try for me.

If you are interested in having good colors, this is not the monitor for you. I am biased and "spoiled" from an old NEC monitor that I have used for photography for the last 3 years that I purchased used on Ebay for $200.

I wouldn't say the Samsung is a bad monitor, but I cannot tolerate the color / contrast / brightness drift when looking at an image even 5 degrees off angle.

I thought the viewing angles were better. Possibly because you are used to better angles. I know it is TN, but looks great anyway, and the only way i feel IPS comes in handy for me, is when more than 1 person is looking at the same thing as you, from a slightly different angle.

I guess we will have to wait until better panels are being released, also i heard samsung partnered up with intel to make super cheap 4k. Sounds promising, but i am not so sure about it.

But it does have some more features right? Like the anti-flickering from the light updates.
I think it was a bummer that samsung messed up the stand, making customers unable to change the stand and so. But its cheap, and thats what matters atm, we do not want to pay 1000$ for the monitor.
I still remember when asus' 31,5" monitor was released. 3500$... jeezuz.

Yes, I am used to wider viewing angles. Sitting at a desk, I sometimes sit up in my chair, or slouch to one side, etc and with the Samsung it was a big disturbance to see the image change. I don't get this with my NEC. I am watching a new 24" monitor from NEC but have not been able to find any reviews. Model number is EA244UHD-BK.

Yes, I am the same way with sitting. I have the Samsung 4k that I purchased last weekend, I used it for 30 minutes and then decided that I am returning it. The resolution is phenomenal, but I can't get past the color shift of the normal TN screen even when sitting directly in front of it and changing sitting positions.

This is the Benefit of the PB287Q. The stand is fully adjustable. My original idea was to buy a vesa flexible arm, but the stand is so good, i've decided not to bother for the time being.
