Good day all!

So I've been looking at getting a new CPU (a i7 to be exact) And I have been reading that its a 4th gen, I gather that this will not be compatible with my mobo that states it supports 3rd gen?

Am I right in thininkg that I need to get a new mobo? this isn't a problem anyway, I could use a new mobo as the SATA ports on my old one are blocked by the GPU

Does anyone think that a new power supply would be needed too?

My specs are

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz

GPU MSI GTX 970

Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB ATA Device
Seagate Barracuda 3.5 inch 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB 6GB/S Internal SATA Drive

12 GB of ram

MSI H61M-P31-G3 Motherboard (Intel H61 Processor, 16GB RAM, M-ATX, Gigabit LAN, Socket LGA1155)

Corsair CMPSU-500CXV2UK Builder Series CX500V2 - 80 Plus Certified Power Supply

If anyone could recommend a MOBO and a high end GPU i will love you forever, Ideally I'd like to not change the PSU, but if it comes down to upping the Watt so be it!!

I want to get a better frame rate for steaming, and get a better rendering speed for youtube/twitch

thanks in advance.

Since the difference between 3rd and 4th gen in terms of performance isn't that great, the cheaper choice would be this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80637e31230v2

A xeon CPU that performs like a i7 but lacks it's GPU and its locked.

Now, since you want to jump to a newer platform, then you can consider something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($241.95 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($71.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $313.93
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Yes, you'll need a new motherboard, that one is a 1155 socket, you'll need a 1150 socket for what you are looking at. However, depending on your immediate needs, you may want to hold off for a few months, both Intel and AMD are coming out with new CPUs soon, and your current i5 is still a very solid chip, especially for gaming. So, if you can wait a bit longer you will likely be able to either get an even bigger upgrade, or at least a cheaper one depending on your budget. Also, there are good i7s of the same generation as your current CPU that will fit in your current board which might be a good cheaper stop-gap to get you to the next releases.

Thanks for the advice friend :)

And also try to get a better PSU:

If you plan to overclock, post your budget and we'll see what can be done.
