Hello,

I have a 500 GB Lacie Rugged Hard Drive, but when I plug it into the laptop and it finishes installing, it says that the total storage capacity is only 14.3 GB (that is, when I go to "Computer" and it says the capacities of the various hard drives)

Does anyone have an idea of why this is, and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks :)

It should have been formatted, but I can try doing it again if you think that would help. Someone else in the office "played" with it before handing it over to me, you see.

It is new, but it has probably been used before.

Hi, sorry for my late reply.

Ok, so I've Hard Disk Sentinel (free version, that is). Do you know where I find the LBA information?

That being said, in Hard Disk Sentinel it says on the left (where it lists the disks) that it's 698.6GB, but that there's 14.4GB of free space left. Looking at the disk details, it says that only 0.62% of the disk's space has been used - leaving 99.38% free space.

183143646 sectors x 512 bytes per sector = 94GB = 87GiB

183143646 sectors x 4096 bytes per sector = 750GB = 698.6GiB

Therefore, ISTM that your external box is reporting an LBA size of 4096 bytes rather than 512, and contains a 750GB HDD, not a 500GB.

Could we see the partition table and boot sector with Microsoft's Sector Inspector?

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt.
