How hard is it to change a 256MB to a 512MB on a Dell 3000?..Thanx

Pretty simple. If you only have one 256MB DIMM, then don't remove the old
one, just add a new one, since you have two slots.

installing memory for the first time will seem a bit unusual but once you do
it you won't believe how simple it is. power down the system, pull the
power cord from the back of the unit, press/hold the power button for 5
seconds to discharge any residual power (the motherboard is 'hot', meaning
that even when turned off has smoe power being sent to it hence removing
power).
remove the cover (open the case),

install memory modules,

replace the cover,

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that if you want to get double
data rate (DDR) you have to install the memory in pairs of the same size
& speed. So if you already have a 256MB stick, find out its speed
(probably PC2700=DDR333 or PC3200=DDR400), and pick up a match from
newegg, outpost, etc.

NOT true...if you have PC2700 you can install PC3200 memory....both memory
sticks will run at the slower of the two........

I think this guy was thinking about dual channel, which does require DDR. He
was just mixed up.

But the 5000 does require matched pairs as it is Dual channel, right?

Although techinically you're correct, would you explain to me why you'd
buy faster (and more expensive RAM) if your machin can't handle it?

Nicholas Andrade,
Simple, if the sticks are on sale by brand or size, at a store. They run out
of PC2700 sticks, so they offer the PC3200 sticks as substitutes, for the
same price.

That would be a nice policy, unfortunately it's been my experience that
if they don't have the item in stock they either say tough luck or give
you a rain check (that's the policy at Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry's, etc.).

But often PC3200 is on sale and PC2700 is not, so the PC3200 is cheaper.

I believe the 2700 is going the way of the 3200..
