+1 the 580 is better for compute than the 680 and im pretty sure though 7970 beats the 580 in compute and it is faster in games although it depends on what your software is compatible whether it is strictly cuda only or supports open standards to which u will be better off with the amd card

well i do agree but that might change from being an afterthought once I have the comp. cause this would be my first PC which would support high end gaming. The last time I played was when games like Halflife were there :p

on the other hand . would the graphic cards be different for media editing and gaming. If so what would u suggest for some extreme video editing. .

and also between these 2 cards would there be any major difference?

Professional class solutions for "editing" and 3D cad work etc are Nvidia Quadro or Radeon Firepro and these GPU solutions are very expensive and I think the GTX 580 is better for non gaming uses but I could be wrong but at any rate I would go GTX 580 because they are cheaper and still have very good performance.

But 680 has less Compute performance OP needs a card for doing work with as well not just playing games and GTX 680 fails at compute performance.
