[SOLVED] 5800x/5900x on B450M DS3H (rev. 1.x) or upgrade

Hi all,

I would like to upgrade from an R5 2600 to an R7 5800x or an R9 5900x on a Gigabyte B450M DS3H (rev. 1.x) (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B450M-DS3H-rev-1x#kf).

Plenty of sources confirm that my mobo will be able to run the beefier CPU with a BIOS update but also I read reviews that my mobo is more of a base/lower class mobo and I'm not quite certain it will be able to meet the power requirements of a 5800x/5900x (VRMs were cited as lower tier). Should I upgrade my mobo when I upgrade the CPU (provided the current mobo is giving me all the connections/expandability I need)?

The computer will be used for 60% content creation/CAD and 40% gaming/VR. At some point I might start doing a bit of OCing to maximise the timeframe of AM4 and the amount of time I can reasonably use the system for.
The overall build is:
CPU: R5 2600 (to be upgraded to R7 5800x/ R9 5900x)
CPU cooler: AMD Wraith Prism (to be upgraded to (Be Quiet! Dark Rock 4 Pro/Noctua NH-D15 with the new CPU)
RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000Mhz CL15 (to be upgraded to 4x16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz/3600Mhz)
GPU: 1660 Ti (to be upgraded to 3080 12GB/6800 XT/6900 XT).
SSD: 500GB Crucial SSD (to add an NVMe for system drive)
Mobo: Gigabyte B450M DS3H (rev. 1.x)
PSU: EVGA 750 GQ (or a Gigabyte P850GM I can get fairly easily)

The 5900X is more energy efficient than the 3900X. Not so much with the OC endeavor, but OCing isn't what it used to be anyway.
Previously, OCing yielded improvements in everything, no matter how small. Now, they're sacrificial; there will be gains in some applications, and losses in others.
I'd suggest leaving OC alone and keep using the current board. There are guides online to optimizing Ryzen performance that doesn't involve OC.

Just add the extra storage, don't replace it. Use the 500GB SSD as an OS only drive.

The Aorus and UD are the best of the 4 at B Tier, the GP-GH is a Tier C, and the last one is a potential fire hazard if pushed hard enough.
With those 3 cards being considered, the 6800XT should work with the Aorus and UD. The 3080 and 6900XT? The Aorus and UD likely aren't adequate for those 2.

Regarding the CPU

• Thanks for that spreadsheet, I wouldn't know where/how to search for one of those. I shall stay away from OCing for the foreseeable future.
• The spreadsheet recommends "Minor airflow" for a 3900x (stock) but I'm not quite sure what that entails. My case is an Empire Gaming Diamond (https://tinyurl.com/yzjwt5pw) with 3x intake 120mm fans and 2/3 exhaust 120mm fans, glass side-panel. There are a couple of slits on the front panel but it's not an airflow/mesh case. Should I consider another case? Alternatively, should I consider an AIO instead of the tower cooler I have in mind atm (I can put up to 240mm on top as exhaust and I'm guessing up to 360mm in front as intake) for better cooling performance?

Regarding storage
You're right, I plan to add an NVMe, not replace one drive with the other. I've edited that to be more clear.

Minor airflow: active airflow over the VRM, for all core workloads, to prevent the VRM from overheating and thermal throttling, which in turn, throttles the cpu. Aka, power throttling.
This is a job the cpu air cooler will cover you in. An AIO/CLC is actually more passive.

The case doesn't look that bad, except when looking at the front panel. Side slits can work - when the manufacturer doesn't pursue some fancy design.
Preinstalled LED fans tend to suck too.
All in all, it's kind of hard to judge this case. I suggest giving it a wait and see with the newer parts first, THEN make the jump if the operating thermals aren't to your liking.

That appears to be on part with the G750H in the partpicker link. Try to aim for something in the A Tier to expand your options to the 3080 and 6900XT.

Overclocking on that board is like asking for Satan to punish you. There's very little headroom left to overclock modern CPU's so any performance benefits will be very small. In terms of the board, my two cents would be that is an inappropriate pairing to put a premium CPU like the 5900X with such an entry level motherboard. I would get a good quality B550 motherboard to go with it, something like:

You should also be aware Ryzen 6000 launches next month.

I will upgrade the RAM, CPU, and CPU cooler first in the current setup and then consider a more appropriate mobo, PSU, or/and case.
