I upgraded my 5600x to a 5800x3d recently. With the 5800x3d installed, I can get into the bios just fine, but when the system tries to boot into windows, it hard restarts, sending me back to the startup screen.

The system can boot into windows just fine with the 5600x installed. It's especially confusing because this 5800x3d used to work in a previous system. My BIOS is updated to the latest version and the motherboard recognizes the CPU in the BIOS.

No UEFI or CSM setting yields any results and I am at a loss. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

SPECS

CPU: 5800x3d
MOBO : Asrock B450 Steel Legend
RAM: 16GB @ 3600mhz
GPU: RX 7900XTX

you can't return it to the original seller, but you can return it to the manufacturer
they are laws to protect customers. 1 year warranty is a minimum for most of goods.

Also, if i were you, i would try also an ubuntu install on your test HDD just to be sure it's not linked to windows somehow.
can you run memtest86+ ? (it boots from a usb key so it's a pretty quick test)

also, your system is a bit unbalanced. you have more ram on your GPU than on your system. 32GB would be better with this GPU

if everything fails even the RMA, PM me i would take a chance to buy it 😀

Any chance TPM is enabled and being used by Windows?

That could be the reason why Windows locked you out, might not detect a key with the new chip, since the fTPM module is integrated inside the CPU.
It isn't. Besides, I was able to get a good price on a new 5800X3D. It arrived and is working flawlessly. So I'm guessing the other chip is just bad.

Can't always win the silicon lottery I guess.

Got it from B&H back in July. Website says it's not available for return. At least I have the 5600X to keep me going until I can upgrade or get a replacement. Regardless, thank you for trying to help. It's appreciated.

If the system is just fine under load with the original CPU (5600X) it's quite possible that your motherboard BIOs legitimately doesn't fully support it. You could reach out to ASROCK and point this out and see if you can find any benchmarks on the internet with that specific board and that new CPU to confirm stable systems with your setup exist currently.

All considerations have me questioning the motherboard. Take your new chip to a hardware joint and ask them to test it for ya. Also, on another note, could your new chip be overheating?

I'd be impressed if it was the faulty chip, I'm sure it's the motherboard itself or a BIOS problem that ASROCK needs to patch. There's huge problems going on with new AMD CPU releases and AM4 boards with respect to BIOS.

I really, reallllyyy don't think it's the chip.

Gave it a shot, tried installing windows off an installation media I made, system keeps crashing during the install. This chip is bad. Sadly it's past the point of RMA. Might buy another one to replace it in the future or just switch to intel at this point. AMD has been nothing but trouble for me
IIRC, you have a 3 year warranty with AMD. At least give the manufacturer a shot before giving up.
