5850 and bottleneck URGENT

I am planning to get a 5850 for Starcraft2 running at 1920x1200 at max, all other issues u don't have to worry about except will a phenom 9850 QC vs Phenom 2 945 vs phenom 2 955 have a big difference.

9850 QC is free, but lacks l3 cache and 1 review said that dawn of war 2 profits from l3 cache dunno is it true. The phenom 965 and 955 have same price and 945 is 1/3 cheaper.

btw phenom 945 is 110 euro and phenom 965 is 160 euro and if i must OC i will cauz i have noctua 120mm cooler to pump all the OC juice power from 5850.

The phenom II is much better. Just get 945 and OC it. The 955BE or 965BE would be easier to OC due to the unlocked multiplier, but not worth the extra 50 they cost.

yeah that was what i was thinking but with noctua 12cm cooler and a haf922 i guess i have no problem getting it to say 3.5 on asus 790fx sb600. asus mvp mobo? pls more opinions.

Definitely go with the phenom II, even if you get the 945 it shouldn't be a hard feat to get it to 3.5 by just raising the fsb. Although the 955 and 965 would be easier with the multiplier.

Well.. if the 9850 is free why not see if it works for you then spend the extra cash when you need to?

Certainly it is an inferior CPU compared to the others, but teh price is right. What is stoppign you from trying teh 9850 first, then upgrading (prices usually dont go up for the holidays) if it turns out to be bad for you?

Firstly, i you are goin to try and overclock then go for the phenom II as the phenom 9850 is a dog for overclocking even with the unlocked multi. 2.9GHz was as far as i got and had to buy aftermarket cooler coz of the temps! 47*c idle and over 61*c on load...61 is the threshhold so didnt let it get above that but would have quite easily!!

But considering its free its not bad at all...It will probs have plenty of bandwith for your 5850 and likely not bottleneck it and considering DX11 improves Multi core support with graphics it will even less likely bottleneck i presume?

Edit: Forgot to say i saw no improvements in FPS going from stock (2.5GHz) to 2.9GHz on CS:S stress test; indicating no bottleneck. But thats with 2x8800's.

I would go with the 955.... The 945 does overclock well but not as well as the 955 and once you hit your FSB threshold on the 945 you hit a wall....

When you buy a CPU you make sure you futurproof your rig, the 945 is an OK CPU, the 955 is a GREAT CPU, specially for gaming......

Neither will really bottleneck a 5850...which is slightly above a GTX285.

If you get a low clocked P1 however, you'll need to OC it.

my 9850qc wont go over 3 ghz and it doesn't have a lot of cache, will these influence gaming?

I also want that it doesn't make the 5850 perform less than 95%.

BTW the phenom 955 is now 150 euros. which is stupid.

It should not bottleneck your GPU but of course you will see a huge jump in performance once you do decide to upgrade the CPU....

at 1920x1200 qc9850 at 3ghz and 5850 able to run the game atleast at 2xaa and 4xaf? I was hoping for max settings for 1920 x1200.

The game is starcraft2.

It will run the game at playable FPS, but with a CPU upgrade you will get a boost is performance regardless. A bottleneck would only occure if you experiance any lag at the desired settings.

Less caps lock please. And yes it is worth the upgrade if you're experiencing problems. My recommendation, buy the 5850 if you're unsatisfied in your current 3870 for gaming. It should be a vast improvement, even bottle necked. Then upgrade the CPU later if you aren't satisfied with your system.
