It was crapped out when I got it. I buy a lot of graphics cards, sometimes they are bad out of the box, sometimes they go bad pretty quickly. These things are right on the technology edge, that is why they have such high failure rates.

Probably because they were overpriced and had competition launching beside them. :hello:

And even then there WAS GTX280 shortages initially for those wanting to buy them, the GTX260 was more plentiful but the GT280 sold out early too.

If ATi has sold hundreds of thousands of cards sofar (according to the same source you quote), then it would seem it's not as bad a supply problem as some previous generations, it's more of a demand problem, that would've been handled with a slight boost in price.

It's not like people aren't get HD5K cards, heck even two of them like was mentioned in the thread, it's an issue of everyone wanting one and there not being enough for that higher level of demand.

This isn't a GF7800Ultra / HD2900 launch or worse GF6800/X800 launch, where there are no cards at all except in single shop for an hour at a time.

Yea, and I assume the exact same thing will happen with the 3 series unless they pull a miracle and sell them at the same pricepoint as ATI..

I still think the overall jist of this thread is fail, within a few days of pre-ordering just about anybody can get their hands on a 5*** series card these days. They may be selling out quickly when they are in stock but they are far from 'hard to get'

It's sold out now, overclockers can't any of the Radeon 5000 series cards in quick enough, even when they do arrive I think back orders are taking whatever stock that have arriving in.

AMD must be laughing all the way to the bank, demand massively outstrips supply and the competition has no response in the form of price cuts to existing hardware (as it's too expensive to produce) or new hardware which is months away apparently.

Actually, I'd argue that AMD must be incensed right now; NVIDIA is MIA, and they can't make enough cards to fill the demand.

I'd agree, if i were in their position i'd be aching all over knowing that millions of people are out there wanting to spend their money my product, whilst my production companies can't fill the void, and all the while, the competition edges closer to potentially regaining control of the market again.

Am i right in thinking that this is the first time in the history of the graphics card market that a situation like this has arisen? ATi on top but out of supply?

As far as I know they don't have magic powers.. they can only make as many cards as they can make. Whether Nvidia were out now or not they woud still have the same numbers in the stores. Unless they are run by the most miserable folks in the world (I know I know.. greedy CEO's probably are) I'd have to assume "we are selling every single card we can produce" is good news. I mean they could be having teh same troubles as Nvidia and have none to sell at all.. Sure, the obvious feeling would be "I wish we could make a few more" but it is still good news around the camp fire and any rational people with AMD are enjoying thier cards success. While I bet they wish they had magic powers to bring a few hundred thousand cards into being.. they know that is silly to wish for...

No, you would not be correct.

I'm not sure about other parts of teh world but I had to wait 3 weeks after release to get my hands on the 9800xt I was waiting for.

No. Definitely not the first. Not even close. Ever heard of a paper launch? This is better than that at least. In fact, I'd go as far to say most new high end tech is usually limited in quantity at first, but high prices squash demand so it is not as obvious. I have seen some of these around, not a ton, but enough if you really try you should be able to get your hands on one.
