Question 60% GPU usage, yet I'm not getting max FPS ?

I have 12gb VRAM and yet my GPU only runs around 50-70% usage in BF2042. My monitor supports 165Hz, but I usually get 140fps on Low. I just don't understand why that the fps isn't 165 given there is plenty of GPU memory, and my GPU runs cool 55C and steady. How can I improve the FPS by tweaking my GPU? Or is it caused by something else?

At 1440p at ultra settings you should be at around 80fps and 85% gpu usage.. Even at low settings you will not reach 165fps. The 165hz monitor will still give you a nice smooth gaming experience even though you are at lower fps. Fps and refresh rate do not have to match. Can you post your Nvidia control panel 3d settings? If you want to bump your fps by about 5% you can use MSI Afterburner to overclock your gpu.

Hey there,

Are you using GeForce experience to optimise games? If so, don't it can make games run badly.

List your full PC specs, including PSU.

Some MSI mobos have issue with higher end RTX. Try update your bios if that's not done.

You could also use DLDSR to increase the load on the GPU to hit higher usage, but as @Fix_that_Glitch mentioned, your prob note gonna get a boost in FPS.

Are you using DLSS, in game frame caps, V-sync on/off, G-sync on /off?

I play at Low settings to get higher fps. Ultra looks better but that isn't priority in fps gaming/shooters. I don't use Nvidia to optimize my gaming. I have that controlled by in game settings.
Bios is updated.

I guess the bigger question is why is a GPU utilized less than 100% (a lot low - 60%) and yet not maxing out fps?

I beleive you are only getting 60% usage because your settings are so low. There is not a strong call for power from your gpu at low settings. At 1440p even at low settings your fps will not greatly increase. It just uses less power from the gpu to generate fps. The Nvidia control panel is a good thing to at least look at for settings. If some things are not turned on in the control panel they may/will not work in the game settings. Do this, Set your game settings to Ultra, play for a bit and see what power usage your gpu is using at that level and what the fps generation is. If you are getting like 80-100% usage then your gpu is fine. If it sticks at 60% then there is a problem. I would at least experiment a little with the Nvidia 3d settings, and there are even resolution settings, along with color enhancement that I believe you would find useful. I would be more than happy to take a look at the 3d settings if you want to post them.

Your CPU may be limiting you when trying to play on low settings with high FPS. Your GPU is great at creating frames with pretty graphics, but in order to get a huge number of frames (high FPS) your CPU has to be able to handle all the instructions. You might be able to raise your settings to Medium, gain graphics quality, and not loose much or any FPS.

If your tag is correct, and you have an i5-12600k, then that would explain it. While a good CPU, an i5 is usually not capable of providing a 3080 with the max performance it can use. Playing at 1440p helps this situation, but you will still probably be held back by the CPU you are using.

The 12600k is more than capable of keeping up with the RTX 3080. It has 10 cores and 16 threads. It is just the game he is trying to produce twice the fps with that is the problem at 1440p. Checking around I find at low settings and using1440p if you are getting around 140-145 fps then that is a normal output.
