I want to upgrade the RAM on my HP 15-dy4013dx Laptop

I ran this prompt in command: wmic memphysical get MaxCapacity

And it says the total system capacity is 32GB.

However, I looked up how much the processor supports and it says 64GB:
Intel® Core™ i5-1155G7 Processor

Crucial also says my laptop can support up to 64GB:
HP HP 15-dy4013dx | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

Because the price difference is a lot, I would appreciate some guidance on whether to go for the 64 or 32GB. I'm an engineering student and I've had trouble with my PC freezing or crashing when I have too many applications open. I also read that updating the BIOS to the latest version could make the 64GB compatible, please let me know. Thank you

Edit: I ordered the 64GB. Before inserting it I made sure to update the BIOS to the latest version. When I tried to boot up the laptop, the screen would not turn on at all. I could tell the laptop was on because of the noise of the fan but the screen remained off. Any tips on getting this RAM to work? If not, I'll return it and just order the 32GB kit.

This was the RAM I bought:

Edit 2: I emailed Crucial support and they asked me to test each RAM stick individually on both slots. At first one of the RAM sticks was only working on one slot, and the other one worked on both slots. I then tried the first stick again and it eventually did work on both slots. Then, I inserted both of them and my laptop actually booted up this time! Not sure why it didn't boot up the other day but everything seems to be working well so far.
Thank you everyone for your help and your comments!

Crucial will give you your money back if their RAM selector is wrong, so it's not too risky to just try it if you think you might need more than 32GB.

I will say that insufficient memory may be very slow but should not crash. Though even if it's actually instability then changing out all of the RAM may well solve the problem anyway.

Just an FYI, Crucial's support site tends to overlook some things on platforms, it's why we advise users take the info they parse with a grain of salt. I would advise that you stick to a 32GB ram kit but please make sure you're on the latest BIOS version for your laptop prior to performing any upgrade.

As for the effective frequency for your ram kit, you can use CPU-Z(memory tab) or HWInfo to see what ram you've got right now.

How much ram do you have at this moment of time?

Hello, thank you for your reply. Currently, I have 12 GB total with one 4 GB stick and one 8 GB stick. Both DDR4-3200

I wasn't aware of that, thank you! I'm also not sure what causes the crashes but the main issue is when the screen freezes and I can't recover my documents.

Well when you don't have any timings or voltage controls as is the case for most laptops, then the quickest troubleshooting step available is often to throw parts at it and see if it goes away. Usually those memory stability tests should be run at least 24h, but parts swapping can be done in a moment.

I would still run the memory tests afterwards though, since if it comes back clean yet the problem persists, a Windows 11 reinstall may be in order or at least a sfc /scannow. Running unstable for any length of time can corrupt many system files.

Hello, I tried the 64 GB kit but the laptop screen would not turn on. Is there anyway to fix this or should I just get the 32 GB kit? Thank you

With no timing or voltage controls in the BIOS, it either works or it doesn't. If it boots with only one stick, then I think you could conclude the 16GBx2 kit should work too. But that doesn't tell you much as that might also work fine even if one 32GB stick does not. I have a Dell laptop with more memory in it than Dell supports but less than what Intel supports (as when installing the maximum according to Intel I get only a black screen ) so even 32 + 16 might work when two 32s do not. You do have a 32GB and an 8GB stick right there if you wanted to try it.

Unfortunately even if the processor supports more memory and the memory controller is in the processor, the system BIOS must support it as well, and as with my Dell, HP may have chosen to hobble it for market segmentation reasons to "encourage" customers to choose a more premium model if they need more memory. Many other Tiger Lake platforms including NUCs do accept two 32GB So-DIMMs so it's not a matter of needing 4 slots.

The 45-day money back guarantee for compatibility technically only applies if you bought it from them, but for those kits their "buy now" links all seem to point to resellers like Amazon who have their own 45-day return policy. At least with Amazon you could return it at many Kohl's, Whole Foods or UPS stores rather than having to mail it out. It would be a good idea though to let them know their memory advisor is wrong.

Test each stick alone see if either will boot.

Hello, thank you for your response and all of this helpful information, I really appreciate it!
I was eventually able to get both 32 GB sticks working at the same time.
Not sure why they didn't work the other day.
